According to the way of establishing the thesis, among the elements and the phenomena arising from the elements, some are substantially existent, and some are nominally existent, it should be said. That is to say, the tactile sensations of the elements such as earth, like smoothness, etc., are nominally existent because they are attributed to the increasing and decreasing parts of the great elements such as earth. Because their respective bases of imputation become the objects of the body sense. Those are not the objects of their respective senses. Shapes like long and short, etc., and manifesting forms are also nominally existent because they are attributed to the differences in color, such as sweetness in one direction, etc. Because their respective bases of imputation are not the objects of the eye sense, the thought of "seeing long, etc." does not arise. The forms belonging to the sphere of phenomena also have two types: substantially existent and nominally existent. Like the completely imputed and the powerful ones, for the samadhi of the impure, such as skeletons, and for the object of the samadhi of meditators on liberation, they are clearly apprehended without relying on speech, etc., so they are only substantially existent. Those arising from aggregation, and those that are obvious, and those arising from proper attention, are only nominally existent because they are merely proximate assumptions of form. Whatever is said in the Vibhasha, that those arising from aggregation and those that are obvious are gathered there because they are the nature of color, I do not consider that to be reasonable. Because atoms are merely established by mental imputation, they contradict the nature of color. If it is said that the senses such as the eyes are not established by experiencing other phenomena such as form, then how is it known that they are substantially established? It is known from inference. If the senses such as the eyes were merely completely imputed and not substantially existent, then the co-emergent bases of the consciousnesses of the senses would not be determined separately, and like consciousness, they would not be determined for the respective objects such as form, and the place of birth would also not be determined separately. But that is not the case.
