Thus, the Madhyamikas assert that the "great" and so forth mentioned in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning are fully present in consciousness. If one understands this, one can be liberated from it. Is this not a false understanding? And so forth. Also, in the same text, it says, "The Nirvana spoken of by the Buddhas is the only truth," and so forth. Which wise person would not think that everything else is false? From these quotations, it can be seen that they deny the true existence of forms and other phenomena. The Vijnanavada also asserts, as stated in the Twenty Verses, "When six (atoms) are joined together at once, the atoms will be divided into six parts. If these six (atoms) also occupy the same position, then the aggregate will become as small as an atom." And so forth. Also, as stated in the Sutra of the Ten Grounds, "O sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind." And as stated in the Lankavatara Sutra, "External objects are not real, only mind. Seeing external objects is wrong. The mind disturbed by habits appears as external objects." And so forth, denying the true existence of phenomena. The reason for establishing forms and other phenomena that are not truly existent is to gradually guide sentient beings towards the nectar of Suchness. Otherwise, if the Suchness of phenomena were proclaimed at the beginning, beings would abandon it, thinking it was a slander against the teachings of the Sugata. Therefore, first, forms and other phenomena are established as they are perceived in the world, and then the way in which these phenomena arise and cease is explained. After explaining in this way, when beings see that the contaminated aggregates and enjoyments, which must be attained through countless eons, are like honey on the edge of a razor, insignificant and with great faults, they become capable vessels, and thus the Dharma of emptiness can be proclaimed to them. As it is said in the Ten Dharmas Sutra, "To seek Suchness, one must first say that everything exists. One who understands all phenomena and has no attachment can later understand emptiness." Aryadeva also said, "Whatever one likes, one should first examine it. If (this person) has already degenerated, then he is by no means a vessel for the true Dharma."
