It should be understood that, with respect to colored objects, the thought of east arises in some places, while in other places, the thought of west and other directions arises in relation to it. Therefore, directions and shapes are merely conceptualized by the mind, and do not exist in reality. This point is well established. Alternatively, the form that has become the nature of atoms is both the elements and that which is derived from the elements. Among these, the Vaibhashikas hold that the four great elements, such as earth, are mutually arising causes and effects, and because they exist in an inseparable state, in any aggregate where any of the elements such as earth are manifestly perceived, the other elements also exist in terms of their own characteristics. For example, in water, one can also observe the actions of other elements, such as wood floating and lotuses blooming. In fire, one can also observe the actions of water and earth, such as flames gathering, rising, and moving. Therefore, in the desire realm, for an aggregate without sense faculties and without sound, the substances of the four elements and the four derived elements exist without distinction. For those with the sense of body and other sense faculties, adding their respective substances results in nine or ten substances. For those with sound, the substance of sound should also be added. As it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge (Abhidharmakosha): "In the desire realm, without faculties and without sound, the subtle dust has eight substances. Possessing the body faculty has nine substances, possessing other faculties is considered to have ten substances." The Sutrantikas believe that wherever any element is observed, that element itself does not exist in its own nature, but the other elements exist in the manner of potential, not in their own nature, because the sutra says that this collection of wood has various different realms. So, what is the difference between the elements and that which is derived from the elements? Why are earth and the like called elements, while form and the like are called that which is derived from the elements? Whatever becomes the common source of colored results is called an element. For example, like the source of gold and the like. Whatever is born
