All phenomena that arise, abide, and change depend entirely on the elements; these are called 'derived from the elements.' Therefore, earth and the like are called 'elements' because they are the source of all forms of effects. What is that? If any of the four functions—support, cohesion, ripening, and motion—are lacking, it is impossible for a sprout to arise from a seed, and from that, a trunk, leaves, flowers, and fruits, and so on. Moreover, the functions of support and so on are the unfailing actions of earth and the like. Forms, sounds, and the like are called 'derived from the elements' because their arising, abiding, decay, and growth depend on the elements such as earth. If the elements such as earth do not arise without other elements of the same class, and if they also change when those change, then are they not dependent on the elements in every way? How can they not be 'derived from the elements'? That is not the case, because forms and other forms of effects, even when they first arise, depend on the cause of other elements, and in the intermediate decay and growth, they also depend on the decay and growth of elements different from themselves. However, the elements do not depend on the decay and growth of other elements different from themselves; otherwise, the types of elements would become infinitely numerous. Therefore, the elements such as earth arise from the cause of their own preceding moment of the same class, and not from what arises from the four elements as a cause. Forms, sounds, and other forms of effects, when newly arising without a preceding similar class, arise from the four elements as an equal cause; for those that already exist and continue, the equal cause is the preceding similar class, and the elements are merely the basis for decay and growth. Therefore, it is also said in the sutra: 'What is form? It is made by the four great elements as a cause.' That is what I think. If the proximate cause of the forms to be produced is merely the elements, then how can the sense faculties such as the eyes of sentient beings have good and bad natures?

It would be unreasonable to arise, since everything arises equally from the appropriation of the four elements, so there is no difference in the cause of producing good and bad. It is not uncertain, because the difference in the result is due to the difference in the cause. Therefore, the birth of good and bad destinies will be no different, because their sense bases such as eyes have no good or bad. For example, although the accumulation of silk cotton as a cause has no difference between good and bad, the result will become good and bad cloth like the difference between weaving and spinning. Although the cause is the same, due to the master's circumstances, the power of merit and non-merit karma, the roots of good and bad destinies become different. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Karma is not the master, there the root is also the same." Just as it is said. The sense bases such as eyes of good and bad destinies are also the same in appropriation, so they are of the same kind in colored phenomena, so they are not of different kinds. Therefore, from the different causes of appropriation, it will become a different kind. Even if they are of the same kind, they will become good and bad due to the difference in the conditions of acting together. Know these. Those who speak of no self-nature and only consciousness, think that the objects such as form established by the Tathagata are spoken because of need, and are not definitive, but not definitive. As it is said in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning: "The Buddhas speak of me and mine because of need, aggregates, realms, and places are also spoken because of need." And it is also said in the Twenty Verses: "The places such as form are there, for those who are tamed by them, it is said because of intention, like illusory beings." And it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "He abandons equality with that meaning, like the posture of an elephant looking, only with the intention of the world, he acts in external objects." Because of this saying. If you ask, how do you know that objects such as form are spoken because of need, and are not truly existent? It is known from reasoning and scripture.
