Then, the consciousness of mind and object, which appears as Dharma by Dharma, and the accumulation of its seeds, and the Alaya consciousness that ripens, is the characteristic of the realm of consciousness, up to this point. Third, the characteristics of the sense bases should be viewed as the same as the realms, not different, because the eye realm and so on themselves are the part that produces the door of near use, so they are established as the eye sense base and so on. That is, how to combine them harmoniously, like this, the form seen by the eye, and the seeing, and the accumulation of its seeds, and the Alaya consciousness that ripens, is the characteristic of the eye sense base and so on. As the commentary says, the form seen by the eye and so on, if the definitions of realm and sense base contradict each other, that is also unreasonable. Therefore, in order to easily understand the respective essence of the three dharmas, their characteristics are shown, and then in order to specifically understand the base that has that characteristic, the respective essence of the classification and distinction, therefore their establishment is explained. That is, the distinction of aggregates, realms, and sense bases is threefold, among which the five aggregates are first established, and in order to show and introduce the form aggregate, it is said what is the establishment of the form aggregate and so on. To this, some who have entered practice say this, in the Sutra of the Ten Grounds it says: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind." And, "As the Lankavatara Sutra says, they are not real, they are only mind, seeing external objects is wrong." Because it says so, and here it also says: "In order to make people understand that form is not real." Isn't that how it will be explained? If you doubt why you should strive to establish external objects such as form, then for those with wisdom, it is true that such a thought arises, but the Sutra of the Sugata says: "How the way of speaking of form and so on, and how the subsequent tamers, the debaters of each sect, explain it, and so on."

If various distinctions are shown, other similar necessities will naturally disappear. Therefore, a brief account of the general establishment will be given. Then, the Blessed One, in the sutras such as the Abhidharma, established the elements, the transformed from the elements, the inner sense bases such as the eye, and the outer sense bases such as forms. The Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas take this as the ultimate meaning and establish that external objects such as forms are real. That is, form is both atoms and their aggregates. An atom is the smallest extreme of form, etc., and therefore is devoid of directional parts such as east, etc. Otherwise, it could be divided into other parts and would therefore not be an atom. Furthermore, what is established after a material object has been completely analyzed by the mind is not an imputed nature, but a real nature that abides in reality. If atoms were not real, then the objects of form, sound, etc., composed of them would also become imputed natures, like the composite objects imagined by the Vaibhashikas. In that case, the sense consciousnesses of the eye, etc., would also become conceptual due to being merely objects of illusion, which would be too extreme. If there are no partless and shapeless atoms, how do mountains, etc., which have directional and shaped parts, arise from them? To this, the Vaibhashikas say that from the aggregation of partless atoms of the four elements, a different quality called "combination" arises when these atoms touch each other. From this arises a coarse, composite real object with visible and tangible characteristics. Most Tibetan logicians also agree with this view, because they assert that coarse self-characteristics, such as forms and sounds, which are objects of sense consciousness, exist apart from atoms. In this regard, the Vaibhashikas believe that when a central atom is surrounded by atoms from six directions, they do not touch each other. Otherwise, since atoms are partless, they could only touch by one part.
