The explanation of the realm by its own nature is represented through the door of the basis, the basis being the eye, and through the door of the object, the object being form. And whatever is the nature of awareness that appears as form, that is the function of eye consciousness. Because it holds its own nature, it is called the realm of eye consciousness. If you ask, "Are the concomitants of eye consciousness not determined by feeling, etc.?" The answer is no, because their basis is not the eye, and their object is not successively form. Because without the eye and form as object and basis, their kind does not arise. If that is the case, wouldn't their basis and object be different from eye consciousness? The answer is: for example, in the city where the king resides, his servants also reside. Although there is the term "servants and king share the same city," that city belongs to the king, not to the servants. Similarly, the mental factors that accompany the consciousness also rely on the basis where the consciousness resides. Although there are terms such as "they share the same basis," those bases and objects belong to that consciousness, not to the mental factors, because mental factors do not have independent bases and objects. Because of conditions, each of them relies on various bases and focuses on various objects, so there is no separate determination of bases and objects. Therefore, the eye and form are the basis and object of eye consciousness itself, and not of others, so this characteristic is without error. The word "realm" is shown to have the meaning of seed, that is, the seed of eye consciousness accumulated in the alaya consciousness, from which eye consciousness will arise in the future, which now exists in the nature of potential, and the vipaka alaya consciousness, in which eye consciousness has already arisen, both of which are called the realm of eye consciousness because they hold the function of eye consciousness through the door of the result. The remaining five should be applied similarly. Just as the nature of the realm of eye consciousness is shown through its own nature and the door of the seed, so too up to mind consciousness, it should be applied in the same way. Like this,
