Having briefly explained it in this way, in order to realize selflessness, [he] intends to explain correspondence, and thus said, "What is correspondence?" and so on. This should be understood through three aspects: classification, the nature of each, and the benefits of understanding it. Classification is to observe in six ways, it is said. The nature of each is without difference, so correspondence is: substances, etc., the aspects of minute particles, gathered together, all aspects such as the elements and the derived elements, without obstruction in location, abiding in one place without difference. For example, a single clay ball, the other elements and the derived elements are all present in it, and it cannot be said that it abides in the east of the earth particle, or that it abides in the west, etc., because all abide in the same location. This is the meaning of what is said. Mixed correspondence is: those coarser things with direction that are larger than minute particles are mixed together, like water and earth particles mixed together in muddy water. Contact correspondence is: coarse aggregates with directional parts touching each other, like a lump of clay touching another lump of clay on a wall. Simultaneous arising correspondence is: aggregates, etc., abiding by arising simultaneously in the same continuum, like the same arising in the three stages of beginning, middle, and end. Correspondence of accomplishing actions is: two monks confessing transgressions, etc., in any dispute, one acting as the object of confession and the other confessing, like mutually participating in this way. Correspondence by agreeing in cognition is: mind and mental factors abiding on the same basis, cognizing the same object at the same time in agreement. Examining its distinctions is: it corresponds with the objects of others, but not with its own objects, like mind not corresponding with another mind, and feeling not corresponding with another feeling, etc. This shows that mind and mental factors are two different substances. If they were the same substance, then they would only correspond with their own objects, not with others.

Saying "possessing the same entity as things" is because it only becomes a name. Furthermore, if mind and mental factors are the same entity, then mental factors are attributed to the part of the mind, and only become nominally existent. If that is the case, then in the Compendium of Ascertainments, etc., it would be unreasonable to differentiate mental factors as substantially existent and nominally existent. Also, in the same Compendium of Ascertainments, some ascetics and Brahmins only consider the mind of name as a substance, and do not accept the dharmas of mental factors, those people are also unreasonable. Why is that? Because from the very beginning, it is unreasonable to say that the aggregates are only five. Having stated the faults in this way, the Bodhisattvacharyavatara concludes: "The five aggregates are not valid, because of the fault of their position, the lack of separate function, and the contradiction with the scriptures." This is what was said. The meaning of the summary is this: the five aggregates are unreasonable, because the aggregates of mental factors such as feeling are part of consciousness, so there are only two aggregates, the aggregate of consciousness and the aggregate of form. If that is the case, then form and other aggregates are also unreasonable, because in reality, form as a different entity from consciousness is not established. If someone asks: Even if form is not truly established, in name, form exists as a substance separate from consciousness, because it does not depend on speech etc., but independently becomes the object of the senses such as the eye. Therefore, it is reasonable to establish it as separate from consciousness. If you say that the mind itself is established as feeling etc. due to the difference in state, this is not contradictory. Then, do these states of mind have a difference in nature compared to the mind, or not? If it is like the first case, then the mind completely becomes other, because by performing the activity of grasping objects different from the mind, it has a nature different from the mind. If it does not perform the activity of focusing on objects different from the mind, it cannot become knowledge with a nature different from the mind, because the different natures of knowledge are established by the activity of focusing on different objects.
