It purifies all afflictions and faith, etc. Thus, one abandons manifest clinging and enters into the state of selflessness. Since similar possession has been explained, then afterwards, in order to abandon attachment and aversion to prosperity and decline, it is intended to explain possession. So, what is possession? As it is said, it is to be understood by means of three things: its characteristic, its divisions, and the benefit of knowing it. First, the characteristic of possession is: as previously shown in the context of explaining actions of possession and non-possession, it should be understood as being established on the state of flourishing and declining of phenomena. Or, in the Compendium of Ascertainments, it says: "That which has power to accomplish conditions for it is called attainment." Relying on that power, that person, that individual, quickly accomplishes the conditions for whatever phenomena, arising and ceasing, they wish to manifest. Therefore, that is also called attainment. As it is said, whatever phenomena are not currently possessed in seed or manifestation, but can be accomplished through conditions, that is also called attainment. Thus, the possession of attainment is divided into three types: possession of seed, possession of power, and possession of manifestation. Among these, for the time being, some non-obscuring and unspecified phenomena, such as afflictions and those born from maturation, and virtuous phenomena such as those obtained by birth, whatever phenomena do not currently possess manifestation but can arise naturally without depending on effort, those are called possession of seed. Virtuous phenomena arising from effort, and non-obscuring and unspecified phenomena such as crafts and emanations, whatever can arise by being accomplished through effort, those are called possession of power. Phenomena such as virtuous phenomena that have arisen in manifestation are called possession of manifestation. Thus, there are eleven phenomena that possess seed: the virtuous phenomena of the three realms that are obtained by birth, and afflictions and non-obscuring and unspecified phenomena born from maturation, three each, totaling nine, and the two wayfarers of the desire and form realms. There are seven phenomena that possess power: the virtuous phenomena of the three realms that arise from effort, and the emanations of the desire realm.

Mind and the two crafts, as well as the mind transformed by form, and the undefiled dharmas, etc. The sum of these is the dharma that possesses universal arising. Then, what kind of individuals possess these dharmas? There are six kinds, namely, the three types of ordinary beings in each of the three realms, and the three types of noble beings. Thus, from the Compendium of Determinations, if the obtained dharma is briefly summarized, it can be known that there are three types: possessing seeds, possessing power, and possessing universal arising. Among them, for afflictive and unspecified dharmas, as well as innate virtuous dharmas, if one seeks what their universal arising is, then the seeds of these, for the time being, have not been damaged by the decline of tranquility, nor have they been completely destroyed by the noble path. Virtuous dharmas are also like this, for example, like those who have completely severed the roots of virtue, they have not been damaged by wrong views, which is called possessing seeds. Thus, as long as its seeds have not been damaged and have not been completely destroyed, then the universal arising or non-universal arising of afflictive dharmas, etc., is called possessing these. The dharmas generated by the manifestation of virtuous dharmas, and the unspecified dharmas, some of the conditions for their arising cause the seed of the cause to be fully nourished and completed, which is called possessing power. The present dharmas, established by their own characteristics as manifest entities, are called possessing universal arising. As it is said. These individuals, in what place do they possess what kind of dharma as a seed, power, or manifestation? There are two types of ordinary beings in the desire realm: those who have severed all roots of virtue and those who have not severed them. Those who have not severed the roots of virtue are further divided into two types: those who possess the dharma of complete liberation from suffering, and those who do not possess the dharma of liberation. The former possesses the two dharmas of its own ground and the two afflictions of the upper ground, a total of six dharmas possessed as seeds. If someone has abandoned desire for the desire realm, then they do not possess the afflictions of the desire realm. If someone has abandoned desire for the form realm, then they also do not possess the afflictions of the form realm. The others should also be understood accordingly.
