Whatever satisfies the senses is not the satisfaction of the senses through the food of morsels, but at that time it is the food of contact that satisfies the senses of the eater, because it completely cuts off the pleasant realm. How is that known? If, when enjoying, one performs the action of the food of morsels, then the birth of form also becomes the food of morsels. Thus, when the births of smell, taste, and touch are each enjoyed by their respective senses, just as the senses of the eater are satisfied through the pleasant, when one sees the form of good food of morsels, it also performs the action of satisfying the senses. If those who have not detached from desire for the food of morsels, when they see the form of the food of morsels, the satisfaction of the senses is the food of contact, not the food of morsels. Because those who have detached from desire for the food of morsels, even if they see the form of food, do not satisfy the senses. When one enjoys the food of morsels, the form of the food of morsels has exceeded the realm of one's own senses, therefore it is of no benefit to it, so it is not the food of morsels, others say. To this it should be said, when one sees the form of the food of morsels, the senses of those who have not detached from desire are satisfied, but the senses of those who have detached from desire are not satisfied, what reason is there for saying this? If one thinks that when those who have not detached from desire see the form of the food of morsels, they completely cut off that pleasant aspect through the way of craving for it, but when those who have detached from desire see it, because they are separated from craving for it, they do not completely cut off the pleasant aspect, therefore there is a difference between the satisfaction and non-satisfaction of those people's senses, if one thinks like that, then the three births of smell, taste, and touch, when each is enjoyed by one's own senses, whatever satisfies the senses of the eater becomes the food of contact and not the food of morsels. Because those who have not detached from desire for the food of morsels, when each is enjoyed by one's own senses, they completely cut off the pleasant aspect, but those who have detached from desire for the food of morsels do not completely cut it off in that way.

It is for the sake of not interrupting (practice). If those who are free from desire do not completely cut off the pleasing aspects of the sources of smell, taste, and touch with a mind of craving, then due to the power of the object, a touch that experiences pleasure will arise, and from that, a feeling of pleasure will arise, and due to the power of the feeling of pleasure, the senses will be satisfied. If that is the case, then when those who are free from desire see the form of a mouthful of food, a touch that experiences pleasure will arise due to the power of the object, and therefore that will also become a mouthful of food. In that case, if it performs the function of a mouthful of food when enjoying it, then the source of form cannot avoid being a mouthful of food. Therefore, it is only established as a mouthful of food when it is digested. Therefore, when any mouthful is eaten, the satisfaction of the senses due to pleasantness is through the form of touch, not the mouthful of food. After that is eaten, if it provides a nearby benefit to the senses and their support when digested, then it should be said to be a mouthful of food when it is digested. If it does not benefit the senses when digested, then it is not food at that time. Furthermore, when any mouthful is eaten, if the senses of the eater are not satisfied due to unpleasantness, then it is not food at all at that time. If the senses and their support grow when digested, then it is a mouthful of food when digested. If it does not benefit the senses even when digested, then it is not food at that time either. Therefore, when any mouthful is enjoyed, some perform the function of the object of touch food, and some become a mouthful of food when digested. Some are the opposite of that. Some are both. Some are neither. Is whatever is a mouthful also food? Is whatever is food also a mouthful? If asked in this way, it should be answered in four categories. Among them, what is a mouthful but not food is: the sources of smell, taste, and touch that do not benefit the senses and the four great elements when digested. There is also what is food but not a mouthful: touch, attention, and consciousness, which cause the senses and their support to grow. There is also what is both: any mouthful that, when digested, causes the senses and their support to grow.
