If asked, what is said to be the cause of the abiding of all sentient beings? Although other things such as the arising of phenomena also cause them to abide, nevertheless, these four foods cause phenomena to abide through many diverse means. Moreover, this abiding that results from food is easily grasped, easily understood, and easily realized even by children and youths. Others are not like that. Furthermore, food causes the senses and great elements to increase if they have not increased, and it also restores those afflicted by disease to health. Others are not like that. Moreover, long-lived beings will die prematurely if they do not find food. Thus, beings abide by means of the four foods. This path is easy to enter into meditation such as mindfulness. Therefore, it is because of these five reasons that it is said that sentient beings can only abide by means of food. Among them, coarse food refers to that which, when it becomes the nature of the three sense fields of smell, taste, and touch, and is digested, causes the senses and their supports to increase and flourish. Therefore, digestion is also called that which results from digestion. Why is coarse food gathered by the three sense fields? It is because if smell, taste, and touch are well digested, they will cause the senses and their supports to increase; if they are poorly digested, they will cause them to diminish. But form, etc., will not be digested even for the sake of increase, nor will they be digested even for the sake of decrease. Therefore, only these three sense fields of smell, taste, and touch are coarse food. Among them, these three sense fields of smell, taste, and touch are also coarse because the senses of nose, tongue, and body chew and consume them bit by bit. In the process of digestion after consumption, they cause the colored senses and their supports to increase and flourish, so they are called food. Therefore, coarse food should only be called food when it is being digested, but not when it is being consumed. Because when they are being consumed, they do not cause the senses to increase, but only when they are being digested do they do that. When eating pleasant food,
