In short, that which is inseparable from one's own consciousness, and is the same as that consciousness, and constantly arises to enjoy its own object, that is the consciousness that relies on itself, and because it is the same as enjoying the object, it is called the basis and similar. Similar to that are the sense organs such as the eye in sleep and fainting, which are separated from the consciousness that relies on itself, and the lineage of the basis-similar sense organ itself arises continuously without interruption. Although it is not the same as the basis consciousness, it is called similar to it because it is the same as the basis-similar sense organ itself in the nature of the sense organ. Why are the basis-similar and similar-to-that established only on the sense organs, and not on the objects? Because whatever is the same as the consciousness on which it relies has the basis-similarity, and whatever has the basis-similarity has the similarity-to-that. However, objects such as form and sound are not the same as the consciousness on which they rely, because they do not have the power to enjoy the object. Therefore, there is no basis-similarity, and if there is no basis-similarity, then there is no similarity-to-that, because it is established in dependence on that. If it is said that the function of the sense organs is to be the basis of one's own consciousness, therefore, whatever sense organ performs its own function is called the basis-similar sense organ, and whatever does not perform its function is called the sense organ similar to that because it has the same nature as the one that performs the function. Similarly, the function of the objects is also to be the object of one's own consciousness, therefore, whatever object performs its own function is the basis-similar, and whatever does not perform its function is called similar to that. If it is said in this way, it is unreasonable, because there is no meaning to the word basis-similar, and also, the sense organs do not perform the function of generating the consciousness of others. Even if it is possible to establish the basis-similar and similar-to-that from the perspective of performing and not performing one's own function, however, there is no certainty for objects such as form and sound, because objects are to be commonly enjoyed by the consciousness of all individuals.

When certain forms act as the object of visual consciousness for Devadatta, it is not appropriate to call them "same basis" because other individuals, such as offerers, do not make them the object of their visual consciousness, as they do not complete their own function. It is never possible for one object to perform the function of generating consciousness for all sighted individuals. Therefore, "same basis" is impossible, and being the same as it is also impossible, because for those yogis who see things beyond the senses, there is not even a little object that is not the object of their consciousness. If "same basis" and "same as it" are determined by whether some consciousnesses take something as an object or not, then when the consciousnesses of some individuals take something as an object, because the consciousnesses of some others do not take it as an object, the state of being "same basis" immediately becomes "same as it." In this way, their definitions would only become confused, and it would be impossible to definitively distinguish "this is the same basis" and "this is the same as it." If this is the case, then it would also be impossible to establish "same basis" and "same as it" for the senses. For example, when Devadatta's sense generates his own consciousness, it does not generate the consciousness of other individuals. If someone says that because they perform their own function, they are "same basis," even if I said so, they are not the same, because these senses arise from each individual's unique karma, and therefore they only function for their own continuum, not as the basis for the consciousness of other continua. Therefore, when they generate the consciousness of their own continuum, they have completely fulfilled all their functions, and therefore they are called "same basis." It is not that the function is not completed because the consciousness of others is not generated, because generating the consciousness of others is not their function. When they do not generate the consciousness of their own continuum, they do nothing at all, therefore
