The different ways of grasping are called different aspects of what is grasped. If asked, isn't the grasped aspect the appearance of the object to be grasped? How can it be a way of grasping that knows? The answer is that the word "grasped" can be used for both action and activity. Because it is to be grasped, it is called the grasped aspect. If it is related to action, then it is so. However, here, the nature of grasping is related to what is called the grasped aspect, so there is no fault. Then, what is the nature of a thing? What is the difference? Other schools believe that the thing with dharma or the basis is the nature, and the dharma or the place of reliance is the difference. But that is not reasonable, because the difference and the one with difference, or the dharma and the one with dharma, cannot be the object of the root consciousness and its retinue, because they are only set up by human desire, so they cannot be established in the reality of things. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Difference and the one with difference, because of the desire to speak, are under the control of others." It is also said in the Compendium of Valid Cognition: "The dharma of many natures cannot be known by the senses." Therefore, it should be understood that the respective characteristics of the aggregates are the nature of things, and the respective characteristics of matter are the difference. Among them, all the differences of form are the form aggregate, which is one of the self-characteristics of the aggregate. Similarly, all sounds, smells, tastes, and tangibles are only the self-characteristics of their respective aggregates. The inner aspects of form, such as blue and yellow, and pleasant and unpleasant, etc. The differences of sound, such as the sound of water, the sound of wind, etc., and pleasant and unpleasant, etc., are called the self-characteristics of matter. The nature and difference of the things with characteristics just mentioned are also known by the mind and mental factors, meaning to completely determine the nature and difference. The meaning of completely determining is to generate a definite understanding of their differences, not just to know the nature of the nature of matter and difference. If that were the case, because the nature of the thing and the matter of difference of one object are not different, both can know both, so the mind can only know the nature, and the mental factors can only know the difference.

The distinction is unreasonable. It is impossible to claim that there is no fault in understanding through self-power and other-power. In the commentary on the Madhyāntavibhāga, it says, "Merely seeing the object is consciousness." And in its explanation, it says, "The word 'merely' means negating distinctions, not grasping differences, but only focusing on the essence of the object." This is because the mind prevents the recognition of the differences in things. Furthermore, a drink mixed with medicine can cure diseases because of the power of being combined with the medicine, and even though the medicine curing the disease is self-power, since there is no difference between the two in curing the disease, it cannot be said that the drink mixed with medicine has no ability to cure the disease, but the medicine does. Similarly, whether it is self-power or other-power, both can recognize both the essence and the differences of things. Therefore, the distinction of "Seeing the meaning is consciousness, its difference arises from the mind" has the fault of being unreasonable. Whether or not certainty is drawn to that object also determines whether that object is seen or not seen in both the world and the scriptures. In the world, it is also common to say, "I did not see or hear" even when one is experiencing things like form and sound when the mind is distracted by other objects. In the scriptures, it also says, "If that is not seen, then this is not seen." This means that it is not the object of the minds of ordinary beings, but the object of the post-attainment of noble ones, and that the general characteristic is established as the object of the minds of ordinary beings, etc., is only because of whether or not one can generate certainty about that object. Even so, the consciousness generates certainty about the self-characteristic of the sense-spheres as mentioned above, but not about the self-nature of the substance. Why is this? It is because of scriptural and logical proofs. First, regarding the scriptural proof, Master Vasubandhu said, "Whatever is the self-nature of the sense-spheres is the object of its own self-nature, but not the self-nature of the substance." Because the sense consciousnesses are said to be the objects of the self-characteristic of the sense-spheres, but not the objects of the self-characteristic of the substance. There is also logical proof: eye consciousness is the object of each individual self-characteristic of substances such as blue and yellow.
