It is for this reason. Although non-associated formations do not possess the characteristic of mind manifesting actions, they are established as the aggregate of formations because they, like associated formations, are a common basis for the delusion of self as the one who manifests phenomena and non-phenomena, the defiled and the purified. That is, in the state where the mind is purified by faith and the like, and defiled by attachment and the like, one clings to the notion that "I am defiled" or "I am purified," and the non-associated formations also gather in those states. The fifth question concerns the characteristics of the aggregate of consciousness: What is consciousness? The answer is: It has the characteristic of distinguishing objects. This is explained in detail: The consciousness that relies on the eye, by which it distinguishes forms, can be extended to the consciousness that relies on the mind, by which it distinguishes phenomena. The word "also" implies mutual inclusion, meaning that not only the consciousness that distinguishes forms is consciousness, but also the consciousness that distinguishes sounds and the like. If mental phenomena can also distinguish objects such as colors and sounds, then why don't they become consciousness? Because it is difficult to answer this objection without pointing out the difference between mind and mental phenomena. Therefore, for the time being, we must explain their differences. Wise people, please listen: As stated in the *Madhyāntavibhāga*: "Here, seeing the meaning is consciousness; their difference is mental phenomena." This means that merely seeing the meaning is mind, and seeing the difference in meaning is mental phenomena. To this, earlier scholars argued that if neither knows, then the aspects of the object are the same, and if both know, then it is difficult to distinguish the difference between mind and mental phenomena. Then they established the argument that both can know, but the mind knows the nature of the meaning by its own power and knows the difference by the power of others, while mental phenomena are the opposite, so there is no fault, and so on, and they elaborate on it. Here it is said that the mind only knows the nature of the meaning and does not know the difference, and the mental phenomena only know the difference and do not know the nature of the meaning, so they will not be without difference. Even so, the objects will not be dissimilar.

It does not change. In order to completely eliminate various different cognitions on a single object, for example, regarding the body of a person, the cognitions of enemy and friend will separately and completely eliminate loveliness and unloveliness. Similarly, it can be summarized by saying: Why is it said to be "having aspects"? The answer is: Because for the four objects, various aspects appear. Thus it has been said. Therefore, the nature and the aspects of difference of mind and mental factors are not the same, because otherwise the realization of these cognitions would become without difference. The difference of the different realizations of cognitions is distinguished only through the difference of the apprehended aspect. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: Because the objects are different, therefore the cognitions of mind are also different. That is what is said. Thus, in the commentary on the Abhidharma, it is said: Place, object, aspect, time, and substance being the same, these five aspects follow the mind, and because they possess the same, they are called "those possessing the same." Isn't that what is said? This is considering only the general sameness of the manner of apprehension, but in reality, they consider the subtle differences in the manner of apprehension of nature and difference to be different. Because that teacher said in the commentary on the Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes: They are also the same in place, object, time, and substance, but if there is no difference from consciousness, it would lead to no difference, therefore it is not because the aspects are the same. For the proponents of Mind-Only, if it is said that there is no object other than the apprehended aspect, and the apprehended aspects of mind and mental factors are also different, then how can they become the same object? If one does not at all acknowledge a truly existent object, then it goes without saying that the object of mind and mental factors is the same. Even so, in conventional truth, whatever appears as a single cessation apart from knowledge, this conforms to worldly terminology and can be established as an object. And here, the aspect is not considered to be the aspect of an external object as in the Sautrantika school, because there is no aspect of an external object other than what appears in knowledge, and apart from it, there is no external object and no object. Therefore, the manner of apprehension of knowledge can be considered as the aspect, and the
