Because it is so. Sixth, the aggregation of all the limbs into three afflictions: Ignorance, craving, and grasping, because they make the mind extremely uneasy and cause suffering to oneself and others, are the pervasive afflictions of affliction. Actions, consciousness, and craving are the nature and habitual tendencies of karma, whichever they may be, and because they immediately cause suffering to body and mind and produce fruition in the future, they are the pervasive afflictions of karma. If it is said that action is the nature of karma and existence is a special habitual tendency of karma, so it can be considered karma, but how can consciousness become karma? Answer: Consciousness with the habitual tendency of karma is a limb of dependent origination here, and it is also distinguished by karma. The remaining limbs are the nature of the fruition of the first two pervasive afflictions. Therefore, they are called the pervasive afflictions of life. The noble Nagarjuna said: The first eight and nine are afflictions, the second ten are karma, and the remaining seven are suffering. This has also been said. These are also called the three parts of dependent origination, and also called the three paths. Seventh, regarding the meaning of the word 'dependent origination,' these inner and outer fruits are the meaning expressed by the word 'dependent origination,' because they arise from mere unmoved conditions without a creator such as Ishvara. Similarly, they do not arise without a cause, but arise from causes and conditions that are in accordance with ignorance and so on. Because they are not the nature of self-sentient beings or self. Because they are only subject to other conditions and are not independent. Because the conditions that cause themselves to arise do not have the thought of causing this. Because they are not permanent, and are ultimately impermanent and destructive. Because they do not abide beyond the time of birth, they are momentary. Because the moment of the cause ceases and the moment of the effect arises simultaneously, the continuity of cause and effect is uninterrupted. Not everything arises from everything, but cause and effect are in accordance.

Because of arising. From one and many causes arise one and many forms of effects, because causes and effects are diverse. From dissimilar causes, dissimilar effects do not arise, because causes and effects are each definite. Eighth, these meanings show the profundity of dependent origination, that is: these internal and external dependent originations are profound in terms of causes, because by the two meanings of no agent and having causes, it abandons causelessness and arising from dissimilar causes. Profound in terms of self-nature, because by the meaning of no sentient being, it is selfless. Profound in terms of arising, because by the two meanings of not being controlled by others and being without movement, although effects arise from conditions, they are not made by them. Profound in terms of abiding, because by the two meanings of impermanence and momentariness, it appears as abiding even though it does not abide. Profound in terms of coming forth, because of the remaining four meanings, the way in which effects arise from causes is extremely difficult to understand. Moreover, dependent origination should also be viewed as profound from other aspects, in this way, one's own nature does not abide even for a moment, yet one also observes the continuum abiding. It also arises from unwavering conditions that are preceded by wisdom, and one also observes that from conditions that have the ability to generate subsequent concordant effects, effects that are concordant with the cause arise. In ultimate truth, there is also no sentient being or selflessness, yet one also observes that in conventional truth, it is established as a sentient being. There is also no agent, yet one also observes that the ripening effects of actions that have been done are not wasted and are experienced individually. Because it arises from causes and conditions that are free from the four extremes, it should be viewed as profound. Why is it free from the four extremes? Dependent origination is not made by me, because it is contradictory for oneself to make oneself. If it arises from itself, then it will never not arise, because it does not depend on other causes and conditions. It does not arise from others, because dissimilar kinds cannot serve as cause and effect. Causes and conditions of the same kind are others.
