Because of seeing the nature of reality. This is like applying the term "happiness" to someone who is free from illness. Merely the absence of non-virtue is labeled as virtue, but not because it produces the desired result. Because this exists without distinction for everyone, and it is not that it never exists, it would follow that all beings constantly enjoy happiness. Therefore, those who say, "Suchness is the virtue that should be dedicated as the cause of enlightenment," are just babbling nonsense without any sense of reason or unreason, because they are admitting a meaning that contradicts scripture and logic. This has already been extensively refuted in the "Differentiation of the Three Vows," so I will not elaborate on it here, for what is the use of painting something that is already dead? Therefore, suchness is similar to faith and so on, and to being without fault, so it is only nominally labeled as virtue, but it is not actually so. Nirvana is beyond the realm of all terms such as virtue, as has been said before. The virtue obtained by birth is that these virtuous qualities such as faith, etc., rely on having been particularly accustomed to them in previous lives, and in this life, the nature of that virtue, that is, the maturation that corresponds to it, manifests as a body suitable to be the basis for accomplishing virtue. By the power of that body, faith and so on naturally arise and are universally present, not by the power of relying on holy beings and so on, which are separately examined. It means that this arises by the power of taking the body of maturation, and not by being accomplished through effort. The virtue arising from practice is that which arises from relying on a holy person, a virtuous friend, listening to the holy Dharma scriptures and their commentaries, properly attending to the impermanence of phenomena, and practicing the Dharma that accords with nirvana, or repeatedly cultivating faith and so on by relying on the three trainings. The virtue arising from intention is the emanation body of the Tathagata or the eight great stupas, etc., or a molded clay image, or a clay statue, etc.

Ma. For example, on painted cloths and so on, drawing body images as pictures, or placing scriptures of the Dharma and fundamental books of the Dharma in front, performing the act of offering flowers and so on. The virtue of benefiting others is: benefiting sentient beings with the four objects of gathering, which are generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, and acting in accordance with the Dharma. Among these, generosity is giving food to those who want food, giving drink to those who want drink, and so on, giving material things. Kind speech is speaking of the six perfections. Beneficial action is causing others to practice the six perfections or the Dharma that is in accordance with them. Acting in accordance with the Dharma is practicing oneself. The first gathers a retinue. The second tames. The third causes one to engage in accomplishing the meaning of the instruction. The fourth causes one to have faith in the one who tames. As it is said: Generosity is equal to showing, taking, and entering, kind speech and beneficial action, and following oneself are considered acting in accordance with the Dharma. As it is said. The virtue of fully grasping the desired result is: the merit arising from generosity and ethics, the objects of action, the birth of gods and humans in higher realms, fully grasping through the act of throwing, and wealthy people who possess enjoyment and wealth, and birth in noble families such as royal families and Brahmin families, making them complete, thus grasping and fully purifying Nirvana and fully grasping what is in accordance with it. In short, it is the meaning of grasping the fruits of higher realms and definite goodness. The virtue of acting as an antidote to what is to be abandoned is refutation and so on. Among these, the antidote to refutation is: seeing faults in conditioned phenomena that are contaminated, therefore, in the form of diseases and tumors, in order to refute the aggregates that are closely taken. The antidote to abandonment is purification and the path of non-interruption, because they abandon afflictions. The antidote to the base is the path of liberation, because it holds all the attainments of what has been abandoned. The antidote to prolongation is excellence.
