Because locations, such as the eye and form in the present moment, have the ability to perform their respective functions. One aspect of all things is the abandonment of the past, future, and uncompounded. When it is known that the present is merely a moment of obtaining its own nature from causes, one should abandon the attachment to the present, thinking that it will enter into future rebirths. Regarding these three times, some internal and external proponents assert that, just like the present, the past and future also exist as substances. Otherwise, the past and future would not be cognized, and past actions would not produce results. And so on, through scriptural and logical proofs, they establish the past and future as existing substances. To this, it should be said: For those non-Buddhists who believe that things are permanent, there is nothing unreasonable in their view. However, for those who believe that compounded things are impermanent, yet say that the past and future exist as substances, this is extremely unreasonable. For things are said to be impermanent, distinguished by arising and ceasing, and that view does not allow for arising and ceasing. For example, if the future exists as a substance, then it should not arise from causes and conditions, because a substance that already exists does not need the action of causes and conditions. If it is said that the action of causes and conditions is to lead the future from the future state to the present state, then does this refer to newly producing a substance, or to making a thing manifest? If it is the former, then it cannot be said that the future substance is led to the present moment, because the substance of that thing produced by causes and conditions is entirely new, and it cannot be said that the future substance is led to the present moment, because the substance of that thing produced by causes and conditions is newly arisen, and it does not exist in the future state. If it is the latter, then is the manifestation itself the same as or different from the substance? If it is the former, then the future state would also manifest like the substance, or like the manifestation, the substance would also be newly produced by causes and conditions, rather than from the future state.

It is not right to say that the future exists. According to the second case, causes and conditions cannot make future entities appear in the nature of the present, because what is made manifest by causes and conditions is other than the entity itself. If something else is manifest, it cannot be said that something else is made manifest, because that would be too extreme. If it is said that manifestation is the entity itself, and cannot be said to be other, that is also not right, because this entity other than manifestation is not seen as a quality. For the qualities of entities do not go beyond the aspects of self and other. Furthermore, do the future and the present have their own distinct characteristics, or not? If they do not have their own distinct characteristics, then the present is also unborn like the future, or the future will also become manifest like the present. If they are different, then if the entity of the future state and its own characteristic are one, then in the present state, just as the future entity is manifest, the future's own characteristic will also become manifest. In that case, it would be unreasonable for one entity to have two times of its own characteristic manifest simultaneously. If the entity and its own characteristic are different, then it cannot be called its own characteristic, just like an ox and a horse. Therefore, if the future exists as an entity, then it is not reasonable to say that things arise newly from causes and conditions. If the past exists as an entity, then destruction is not reasonable. If the entity of the present object remains without being destroyed, then it would be reasonable to say that the past exists as an entity. If the present entity is destroyed and leaves no trace, then from where will the entity called the past arise? Because the past is that which the present precedes. If it is said that the present object is destroyed, but not the entity, then if the entity and the object are one, then the entity will also be destroyed like the object, or the object will not be destroyed like the entity. If they are different, then it should be possible to distinguish two different natures of entity and object in the present, which is also not
