Because the common cause that I understand is directed towards Nirvana. Apart from that, the dharmas that are fully associated with desire are looking outwards, because of the increasing attachment to the merits of the five desires, and because of following accordingly. The four realms are the realms of consciousness of nose and tongue, and the realms of smell and taste. The two sources are the two sources of smell and taste. The other part of those, refers to those that are gathered by being fully associated with desire, except for those gathered by hearing etc. the teachings of the Buddha. For looking outwards without detachment from desire for desire, because of knowing that it is only dharma, one should abandon the attachment that appears there. Looking inwards is the opposite of looking outwards, those that are gathered by hearing, thinking, and meditating from the teachings of the Buddha, and by the ground of Samadhi are looking inwards, because they are directed towards Nirvana and Samadhi. The other part of that, refers to the aggregates, realms, and sources etc. that were just mentioned. For looking inwards without detachment from desire from desire, because of knowing that it is only dharma, one should abandon the attachment that appears there. Afflictions refer to non-virtuous and obscured and unlabelled dharmas, because they are associated with any of the causes of motivation of afflictions and near afflictions, or corresponding companions, or their own nature, they are called afflictions. Among them, what is obscured and unlabelled is, except for the three special objects, the mind that is universally present at all times, the four afflictions such as the view of self etc. that are associated with the afflicted mind and that, and the co-emergent view of the body and the extreme view that are associated with consciousness, and the afflictions and near afflictions and corresponding companions etc. that are born in the form and formless realms. These are obscured because they are disturbed by afflictions and near afflictions, and also unlabelled because they have not been predicted to produce a ripening result. Among them, the afflicted mind is unlabelled because it enters the same continuum together with virtue. The view of the body and the extreme view etc. of the wheel of consciousness are desire.

Furthermore, it is also unwholesome because it universally arises in the continuum of those who are free from desire, and also because looking inward, it cannot incite all misdeeds. The afflictions of the upper realms, etc., are not unwholesome because they are thwarted by the power of samadhi and cannot incite all misdeeds. The ten realms are the seven consciousness realms, and the realms of form, sound, and phenomena. The four sources of birth are the sources of birth of mind, phenomena, form, and sound. One aspect of these is encompassed by the unwholesome and the obscured and unspecified. By knowing that it is merely an afflicted dharma, one abandons the manifest clinging to self in it. That which is not of the nature of affliction is the wholesome and the unobscured and unspecified, which is not of the nature of affliction, because afflictions and near afflictions, etc., do not possess any of the causes that incite them, the corresponding friends, or their own nature. Otherwise, it would contradict the wholesome or the unobscured and unspecified. The eight realms and sources of birth are the five faculties and the objects of smell, taste, and touch. One aspect of the remainder is the abandonment of the unwholesome and the obscured and unspecified. Since afflictions such as desire arise from the faculties such as the eye, they become of the nature of affliction. Otherwise, would not the unwholesome actions of body and speech, etc., which possess the cause of affliction, also become non-afflictive? It is not the same. For example, the power of poison to generate suffering is only found in its own nature, in food mixed with poison, and in flowers and fruits produced by poison, etc., but the ability to cause suffering to others is not found in the ground where the poison grows. Similarly, the power of afflictions, such as harming oneself and others, arises from their own nature, from corresponding friends, and from the results that incite them, but not from the faculties, etc., from which they arise, because it is reasonable for the power of the cause to transfer to the effect, but it is not reasonable for the power of the effect to transfer to the cause. Therefore, just as one says that whatever possesses the power of poison to generate death and suffering, etc., is called poisonous, afflictions, etc., with
