Arising is the arising of formations moment by moment. The arising of union and separation is suffering and non-suffering, as well as union and separation, or whatever the state of mind with attachment and without attachment. The arising of fear and formation is whatever the state of the formation of the vessel world. What arises from death and transmigration is whatever the state of mind, which is the world, dying and being born. What arises in other states is whatever arises in states such as burning, and in states such as illness. What arises in the past is the existence of the past. What arises at the time of death is the existence of death. What arises in between is the intermediate existence. What arises at the time of linking is the existence of birth. If it is said that it is the first arising and repetition, it is not, because it is said to be the first arising in terms of the birth existence of this life, and this is said in terms of the birth existence of the future life. If one knows that what has not arisen is not produced by causes and conditions, but is merely a dharma, then one abandons the clinging to the self as truly existent, independent of causes and conditions. The others are easy to understand. Grasping is the sense organs with form, and the mind and mental phenomena, because they enjoy their own objects. The three aggregates are feeling, perception, and consciousness. One aspect of form and formations is the sense organs with form, and the corresponding formations, in order. The twelve sources are the five sense organs and the seven consciousness sources. The six sources are the internal six sources. The aspect of the dharma source and the source is the mental phenomena. If one knows that grasping, which enjoys objects, is merely a dharma, then one abandons the clinging to the self as the enjoyer of objects. Furthermore, the detailed classification of grasping is: grasping without touching the object is the eye, ear, and mind, because the mind is not form, and the eye and ear perceive distant sounds and forms. Therefore, these three faculties are the supernormal powers of yogis.

It is possible to establish. What apprehends by encountering objects are the nose, tongue, and body. These are such that when they focus on their own objects without any separation between the sense organ and the object, the consciousnesses of those objects arise; but when there is separation between the object and the sense organ, the arising of those consciousnesses is not focused upon. Therefore, it is not possible to establish direct perception for those sense organs. Moreover, the five sense consciousnesses, along with their associated mental factors, only apprehend the present object, because the past and future do not exist as entities, and these arise from the power of the object's actual existence. Even the present is apprehended in dependence on the determination of each object; for example, the eye consciousness, along with its associated mental factors, only apprehends form and does not apprehend other objects. The mind consciousness, along with its retinue, apprehends all characteristics, both specific and general, all times—past, future, and present—and all objects, such as forms and sounds. If it is asked whether the characteristics of what is grasped and what grasps are not established, the answer is that in reality, all phenomena are without an agent, and therefore there is no grasping. However, conventionally, from the aggregation of conditions such as objects and sense organs, consciousnesses that appear as forms, sounds, and so forth arise. Therefore, it is merely by approximation that we speak of grasping. Whatever is said to be grasping is also what is grasped, because the sense organs such as the eye are also objects of the mind consciousness. What is grasped but not grasping is everything that is the object of grasping, such as forms, sounds, and so forth, as well as non-associated compositional factors and unconditioned phenomena. When the objects of grasping of the grasping ones are known to be merely phenomena, attachment to the appearance of a self as an object of grasping is abandoned. Looking outward refers to the teachings of the Buddha, the Dharma of scripture that arises from hearing from a virtuous friend, and the meaning of what is heard is examined and analyzed with reason, arising from contemplation, and in accordance with that hearing and contemplation, the mind and mental factors gathered by practicing the Dharma realized through the door of proper cultivation are not looking outward, even though they are practiced in the desire realm, because the nature of Dharma
