That which is focused on with whatever ability, that is established as having afflictions. If that is the case, then for the unspecified afflictions and near afflictions, etc., because there is no ability of affliction to generate misdeeds, would they not become non-afflictive? No, because although they do not have the ability to incite misdeeds, they do have the ability to make the mind close to affliction. Otherwise, they would lose the nature of affliction. For example, poison killed by mantra and medicine, although it does not have the ability to kill, it does not abandon its own nature. When one knows that not having afflictions is merely dharma, one abandons attachment to self. Dividing the past, etc., into sixteen, there are six: the three times, past, etc.; those three dharmas, etc.; the three realms, desire, etc.; the three dharmas, learning, etc.; the three to be abandoned and not to be abandoned, seeing to be abandoned, etc.; and dependent arising. The first is divided into the three times themselves, and the difference between the three times and nirvana being expressible or inexpressible. The first, the past, is that which arises from the cause having obtained its own nature, and then ceases again. The first eliminates the future and the unconditioned, and the second eliminates the present. Because the cause has already produced the effect, and the effect has obtained its own nature and perished, the cause and effect have been exhausted. Like present attachment, etc., and faith, etc., because there is no power to completely afflict and purify the mind, the past attachment, etc., and faith, etc., have completely passed beyond the time of affliction and purification. The cause is completely grasped and perishes because it perishes after leaving behind imprints. The existence and non-existence of the effect and its own characteristic is that, in the present time, there are the imprints produced by it, and the establisher itself does not exist. The sign of pervasive conceptualization of memory is that it exists only in the object of memory that follows previous experience. The sign of pervasive affliction of viewing is that, because one remembers a pleasant or unpleasant object of the past, subsequent attachment or anger will arise. One aspect of all is the present.

The past and the future, and the abandonment of the uncompounded, etc. If it is known that the past does not exist as a substance and does not enter into the present state, then one abandons the attachment to the belief that some self from past lives enters into the present state. The future has the cause to produce, but because it has not yet obtained its own nature, it has not arisen. The statement "having a cause" excludes the uncompounded; the statement "not yet arisen" excludes the past and the present. Not having obtained its own characteristics is because its own nature has not yet arisen. The use of cause and effect is because the action of that seed has not been done, and it has not yet arisen. Like the present attachment and faith, the objects that make the mind completely afflicted and completely purified do not exist nearby, and the sign of equanimity's complete purification is that one does not grasp the sign of pleasant or unpleasant, but places it in equanimity, because complete affliction based on it does not arise. Manifest joy and its absence, in order, are the signs of complete affliction and complete purification. Because one grasps the sign of some dharmas that are in accordance with the complete afflictions that will arise in the future, one will become anger that is in accordance with attachment, and some dharmas that are in accordance with complete purification are that, because one grasps the sign, manifest trust or faith, etc., will arise. Having a cause and one's own characteristics and not having a cause and one's own characteristics are, in order, having the ability to produce a result, and because it is not established from one's own cause. If one knows that the future does not exist as a substance, then one abandons the attachment to the belief that the self of the future state enters into the present state. The present arising is characterized by having its own nature arising from a cause and not ceasing, and because the cause has already extracted the result, it is used, and because the result's own nature has not perished, it is not used, and the objects of the present attachment, etc., and the faith, etc., of the mind that completely afflict and completely purify exist nearby, and the cause of the imputation of the past and the future is because having already obtained the present state is the past, and not yet obtained and able to be obtained is the future. Exists as a doer.
