Because yogis must understand their own wisdom. The higher understanding is the understanding that follows realization, because it occurs after understanding the Dharma. Completely abhorrent understanding is understanding suffering, that is, being disgusted with the suffering of beings in the three realms, such as birth, or in order to make those who want liberation abhorrent. Completely unsatisfactory understanding is understanding the origin, because it arises from striving to abandon the origin. The understanding of non-arising is understanding cessation, because it observes the cessation of the nature of non-arising of suffering. Understanding of understanding is understanding the path, because it observes the path as the nature of wisdom. The ultimate understanding is understanding exhaustion and non-arising, because they arise when the action of the path is completed. Understanding the great meaning is understanding the Mahayana, because it observes the nature of the perfection of self and other benefits. These thirteen understandings are also distinguished from the differences of the three causes of hearing, thinking, and meditation, such as faith and understanding. From the difference between conventional truth and ultimate truth, two types are distinguished: understanding of oneself and understanding the nature of others. From the difference in the time of generation, the lower understanding and the higher understanding are distinguished. From the difference in the aspect of the object, four types are distinguished, such as completely abhorrent understanding. From the difference between observing self-interest and other-interest, two types are distinguished: ultimate understanding and understanding the great meaning. Furthermore, there are five dharmas that should be understood: designation, ultimate truth, the ultimate of action, other minds, and all aspects. Understanding them in order is: understanding the conventional, understanding the ultimate, understanding exhaustion and non-arising, understanding other minds, and understanding the ten powers. Among them, understanding the conventional is twofold, namely understanding the scriptures and understanding worldly conventions. The first is to understand good and non-good, sinful and sinless, dependent arising, etc., thereby abandoning some and relying on some separately.

It is so. Secondly, by knowing the ways of the world, one accomplishes things according to how things are in the world, like causes and conditions. The first type of conventional knowledge is divided here into three types, such as knowledge of faith. By knowing the ultimate truth, one knows the nature of the four truths and suchness as they are, and directly realizes the abandonment of the dharmas to be abandoned by seeing and meditation. This ultimate knowledge itself is divided here into seven types, such as knowing individually for oneself. By knowing the exhaustion and non-arising, one fully knows the limit of what is to be done, has certainty and no doubt, and has no pride in one's own abandonment. By knowing the minds of others, one knows the minds of others, such as virtuous and non-virtuous, and knows the realms and predispositions of others as they are. By knowing the ten powers, one knows all aspects of knowable things, and having known them, one engages in all instructions and subsequent teachings to others, cuts off all the doubts of sentient beings, and establishes them in the fruits of the heavenly realms and happy migrations. This is what is taught here by the name of knowing the great meaning. The purpose of these knowledges is twofold: to accomplish benefit for oneself and to accomplish benefit for others. Among them, the knowledge of treatises that accords with the abandonment of conventional knowledge, and the direct realization of the abandonment of ultimate knowledge, such as direct perception and knowledge of the Dharma, and the exhaustion of knowing the limit of what is to be done in abandonment and non-arising, all these knowledges have the necessity of accomplishing one's own benefit. The knowledge of the minds of others, which knows the realms and predispositions of others, and the knowledge of the ten powers, which knows all aspects of knowable things, both have the necessity of accomplishing the benefit of others. These also show that the number of these thirteen knowledges is fixed. In short, all these knowledges can be summarized into two types: conventional knowledge and ultimate knowledge. Thus, the three types such as knowledge of faith, and knowing the nature of others, and the great meaning or the ten powers, are only conventional knowledge. The seven types such as knowing individually for oneself are only ultimate knowledge. Knowing the ultimate or the knowledge of exhaustion and non-arising is the complete cutting off of the limit of what is to be done.
