However, those are merely the cessation of designation or the cessation of nomenclature. Does the attainment of the distinct analytical cessation of whatever dharma also entail the attainment of non-analytical cessation? Or, does the attainment of non-analytical cessation also entail the attainment of analytical cessation? Answer: There are cases where analytical cessation is attained, but non-analytical cessation is not attained. For example, when the path of seeing arises, the wrong view that severs the root of virtue, and the aggregates, elements, and sense bases of the lower realms (excluding), the future afflictions to be abandoned by the path of seeing. Because as long as the path of seeing has not arisen, one cannot make them into a nature of not arising, so non-analytical cessation is not attained, because the path of seeing destroys the seed. There are also cases where non-analytical cessation is attained, but not analytical cessation. For example, when the path of seeing arises based on the path of immediate result, the non-discriminating non-analytical cessation of the future paths of seeing that rely on other meditative grounds is attained, but it is not analytical cessation, because it is uncontaminated. Why is non-analytical cessation attained? Because as long as the path based on the path of immediate result has not arisen, the future paths of seeing that rely on other meditative grounds are still possible to arise for that individual. When it arises, those dharmas will never arise again in that continuum, because it is impossible for one individual to generate the path of seeing twice. Therefore, they attain non-analytical cessation at that time. There are also cases where both cessations are attained. For example, when the peak of the path of joining and forbearance arise, one successively attains the non-analytical cessation of the wrong view that severs the root of virtue, and the aggregates, elements, and sense bases of the lower realms. When the path of seeing arises, because the seeds of both are destroyed, analytical cessation is attained. Therefore, when the wisdom of the peak arises, even if the seed of the wrong view that severs the root of virtue has not been abandoned, it becomes a nature of never arising again in that continuum, so non-analytical cessation is attained. The same principle should also be observed when forbearance arises, and the non-analytical cessation of the aggregates of the lower realms is attained. Both cessations...

There are also those that cannot be obtained, namely, the past and present, and the uncontaminated future dharmas that are subject to arising. The Vaibhashikas (Sarvastivadins) consider both of these cessations to be permanent substances. In particular, they consider discriminative cessation to be of the nature of many separate substances of separation, equal in number to the objects to be abandoned. As it is said: What is discriminative cessation? It is separation, each separate. That which permanently obstructs arising, the other cessation is non-discriminative. Furthermore, they believe that all contaminated dharmas of the three times can obtain discriminative cessation, while uncontaminated future dharmas that do not arise can only obtain non-discriminative cessation. Uncontaminated past and present, and future dharmas that are subject to arising, cannot obtain either cessation. Contaminated future dharmas that do not arise can obtain both cessations, while contaminated past and present, and future dharmas that are subject to arising, are believed to only obtain discriminative cessation. Immovable cessation is the cessation of all feelings of pleasure and pain at the time when one has separated from the desire of the third dhyana of the Form Realm, but has not separated from the desire of the fourth dhyana above it. Cessation of perception and feeling is as previously explained, such as "nothingness." In short, the non-affirming negation of the cessation of the seven consciousnesses together with their basis at the time of entering cessation should be regarded here as unconditioned. Why are these established as unconditioned? Because there are two things to be abandoned: afflictions and the feelings that are their abode. Feelings are also of two kinds: changing and unchanging. These are, in order, feelings of pleasure and pain, and feelings that are neither pain nor pleasure. Among these, the abandonment of afflictions establishes discriminative cessation. The abandonment of the two kinds of feelings establishes, in order, immovable cessation and cessation of perception and feeling. Among these, the abandonment of afflictions is the transformation of the basis due to separation from the bad migrations that are in accordance with them. The abandonment of feelings is separation from the obscurations of samadhi, which are their antidotes.

Because of the change of the basis. Therefore, in the first dhyana, although the feeling of suffering ceases, the feelings that cause change have not completely ceased, so it cannot be said to be a change of basis, and therefore it is not established as uncompounded. Thus, the sixteen natures, including the five form aggregates included in the dharma-sphere, are the dharma-dhatu. Having explained the classification of dhatus in this way, intending to explain the classification of ayatanas afterwards, it is said, "What is the classification of the ayatanas?" etc. These are easy to understand. In order to briefly explain the meaning of the detailed explanation, wanting to show that because the dhatus are established by specifically pointing out from the aggregates, and the ayatanas are established by specifically pointing out from the dhatus, therefore the aggregates etc. are all three dharmas. Among them, the form aggregate includes the form-dhatu and the ten ayatanas. The dharma-dhatu includes the aggregates of feeling, perception, volition, and the dharma-ayatana. The mind-ayatana includes the seven consciousness-dhatus, so these three include all the dharmas previously established. Having explained in detail the classification of aggregates, dhatus, and ayatanas in this way, next, we will examine some of the issues that arise incidentally. That is, examining the four possibilities of the sense faculties and dhatus, and examining the equality of location by means of the three: object, faculty, and basis, and understanding through two ways. First, with regard to the sense faculties, it is said, "It is also called eye," etc. Among them, for the Arhat who will finally pass into nirvana in the realm of nirvana without remainder, that eye is not the eye-dhatu, because it does not act as the cause of other eyes. The meaning of dhatu here is the meaning of cause. Otherwise, that is also the dhatu that holds in the manner of the proximate place of eye consciousness. Or explain it this way, when Arhats pass into nirvana in the realm of nirvana without remainder, they first enter the supramundane path, and then enter cessation.
