It should be done like this. If the basis is the desire realm, then the nose, tongue, and body, which can discriminate, only enjoy their respective smells, tastes, and tactile sensations, and do not enjoy others, because these are grasped by contacting the objects. If the basis is the form realm, then the body that can enjoy also only touches its respective tactile sensations, and does not touch others, for the same reason as before. In the form realm, smell and taste do not exist by nature, because these two are the nature of food in the desire realm, and those born there have also abandoned attachment to food in the desire realm. Since there are no objects of smell and taste, the nose consciousness and tongue consciousness, which possess objects, also do not exist. Is it not because there is no need, so these two faculties also do not exist? Answer: No, because they are closely needed for adorning the basis, and because they are accomplished by desire. The activity of adorning the basis can also be accomplished by the root basis, and those who have desire for objects will also develop desire for the roots, while those who have abandoned attachment to objects will not develop desire for the roots, because there is no need. Therefore, is it unreasonable to say "accomplished by desire"? Answer: The roots are generated by desire through two paths, namely, attachment that follows objects and attachment that follows the body. Those who have not abandoned desire for the senses generate desire for the roots in both ways. Those who have abandoned desire for the senses but have not abandoned desire for form have desire for the roots in the way of attachment that follows the body, because they are based on the body that should be followed with attachment, other than the roots such as the eyes, and even if they have not abandoned body attachment, it is contradictory to not having abandoned form attachment. Therefore, sentient beings born in the formless realm do not have roots because they have abandoned attachment to the body with roots. Those born in the form realm have desire for the roots in the way of attachment that follows the body, therefore, they completely possess the roots, and this is also accomplished by desire. This is reasonable.

It is not because the basis alone can make the basis beautiful. Just as a basis with senses makes the basis beautiful, a basis without senses does not, because this would lead to the absurdity that there is no difference between dead and undead things in whether the basis is beautiful or not. Therefore, those who have a strong attachment to the body are even more attached to the beauty of the body. Therefore, it is reasonable that the senses of nose and tongue are also accomplished for those born in the form realm in order to make the body beautiful. Those who arise and are born in the desire realm directly know their own corresponding dharmas through their corresponding minds, and they know the two higher realms and the undefiled dharmas through hearing and thinking, therefore. They also know the behaviors in the three realms and the undefiled dharmas. Just as those who are born in the desire realm, those who are born in the form realm directly know their own corresponding dharmas through their corresponding minds, whether they are in a state of meditative stabilization or not, and they know the higher, lower, and undefiled dharmas through hearing, but not through thinking, because those born there, as soon as they begin to contemplate the meaning of what they have heard, will naturally enter into meditative stabilization due to the power of habit. Therefore, they know the three realms and the undefiled dharmas, and that is how it is. Those who are born formless, the childish ones, only know their own corresponding level, but not the higher, lower, and undefiled, because there is no hearing or thinking there. Those born there who are noble ones also know the undefiled dharmas through their corresponding minds in the manner of remembering what has been subsequently attained. Therefore, they also know their own corresponding level and the undefiled dharmas. Thus it is said. The commentary says that external ordinary beings only know their own corresponding level, and some of these dharmas, due to the influence of previous hearing, can also arise by focusing on a higher level. Thus it is said. Undefiled wisdom, in the subsequent attainment, views the dharmas that operate in the three realms as illusory.
