Because the power of the previous eye consciousness ceasing allows the subsequent one to gain the opportunity to arise, therefore, each consciousness that has just ceased becomes the immediate cause for all six subsequent consciousnesses to arise. According to these views, whichever of the six consciousnesses has just ceased is called 'mind' (manas) because it is the place of consciousness for the sixth, the mental consciousness. As it is said in the scriptures: 'In order to well accomplish the support of the sixth, it is asserted in the eighteen realms.' And, 'The sixth that has just ceased is the mind; whichever consciousness it is, that is the mind.' This is what appears in the scriptures. According to those who believe that multiple consciousnesses arise simultaneously, the eye consciousness that has just ceased does not open the opportunity for the arising of other dissimilar types of consciousness such as mental consciousness. Because when the eye consciousness has arisen and is not yet ceased, there is no contradiction to the arising of other dissimilar types of consciousness, therefore the opportunity for their arising is not obstructed. If it is assumed that merely not hindering their arising is considered opening the opportunity, then everything opens the opportunity for everything, and therefore everything becomes the immediate cause of everything, which would be too extreme, like the function of the Vaibhashikas. Therefore, the eye consciousness and so on that have just ceased are not the immediate cause of consciousnesses dissimilar to themselves. So, the consciousness of the six that has just ceased is not considered 'mind' because it acts as the support for the sixth, the mental consciousness, but rather because it has become the immediate place for the subsequent consciousness of the same type as itself, therefore it is called 'mind.' Why does it become the support for the subsequent consciousness of the same type? Even according to the views of those who believe that multiple consciousnesses arise simultaneously, there is no place or opportunity for two consciousnesses of the same type to arise simultaneously. Therefore, as long as the eye consciousness has arisen and not yet ceased, there is no place in that continuum for a second eye consciousness to arise. When the second eye consciousness arises after the first eye consciousness has ceased, it is due to the power of the previous one ceasing that the subsequent one gains the opportunity to arise.

Because it is obtained at this time. Therefore, the former is the immediate place of the latter. Therefore, one consciousness cannot be the immediate cause of many dissimilar consciousnesses, and even similar ones can only be the cause of one, not many. Because many similar consciousnesses do not arise simultaneously. Therefore, it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "They are only of the same kind, the ability is definitely transformed." That is what is said. Also, in the Pañcaskandhaprakaraṇa, it is said: "That which is called mind for the consciousness immediately after the cessation of the six aggregates of consciousness such as the eye is to establish the place of the sixth mind consciousness." This is only the view of the schools, and it seems inappropriate for the view that many consciousnesses arise simultaneously. In the commentary on the Trimśikā, it is also said: "From the immediate cause of the ālaya-vijñāna, the entering consciousness arises, and one immediate cause does not produce many consciousnesses." This is also without detailed analysis of the meaning of the immediate cause. The mind has been explained. Next, it is time to explain consciousness, so it is said, what is consciousness? The brief answer to this question is: there are six aggregates of consciousness, namely, eye consciousness, etc. The consciousness that arises from both the object and the sense faculty is named eye consciousness, etc., by the sense faculty. Why are they not named form consciousness, etc., by the object? Because the sense faculties such as the eye are the unique support of the consciousnesses that depend on them, so if they are named by those sense faculties, that consciousness will be understood without error. For example, the sound of a drum and barley malt. The objects such as form are not unique like the sense faculties, because form, etc., are also the objects of mind consciousness, and one object can be commonly enjoyed by the multiple sense consciousnesses of multiple people. Therefore, form
