Because the six entering consciousnesses cease, and also because other consciousnesses that serve as the basis for self-grasping are not acknowledged. In this way, this should not be abandoned by the noble ones, because like the cessation attainment, it abides in a state of extreme peace. If there is an afflicted mind, even if the six aggregates of this cease, because the mind exists, other consciousnesses possessing self-grasping are not acknowledged. In this way, that should not be abandoned by the noble ones, because like the cessation attainment, it abides in a state of extreme peace. If there is an afflicted mind, at that time the six entering consciousnesses cease, but because the mind exists, it remains for a long time while still possessing self-grasping, therefore it is abandoned because it is seen as a non-leisurely place. Furthermore, if there is no afflicted mind, then it is unreasonable for self-grasping to universally arise in the minds of ordinary beings that are virtuous, non-virtuous, and unstated, because in all circumstances, there is no other mind connected to self-grasping. This is also not what is desired, because in situations such as "I give alms," "I kill and draw pictures," etc., the arising of self-grasping can be observed. Furthermore, if there is no self-grasping at the time of giving alms, etc., then it would also be harmful by inference, like this: It is unreasonable for the fruit of existence to arise from virtuous actions bound by self-grasping, just like the virtue of an Arhat. The virtuous actions of children, such as giving alms, are also not bound by self-grasping. This is a non-observation of pervasion. If self-grasping does not exist simultaneously with virtue, but because of "I will give alms," "I gave alms," etc., self-grasping is connected before and after, therefore it is bound by it, if it is thought in this way. Then, the meditative stabilization on the supramundane path by noble trainees will also be bound by self-grasping, because for them, there is also the connection of thoughts such as "I have stabilized," "I will stabilize." In this way, one would fall into the faults as previously stated, therefore, even unwillingly, the existence of the afflicted mind must be acknowledged. The self-nature that thinks of "I"

The explanation of mind is finished. The mind that becomes the immediately preceding condition is the six consciousnesses that enter, which, at the moment of cessation, are the very consciousnesses that open the opportunity for the subsequent consciousness to arise, and thus are called the mind that acts as their immediately preceding condition. In this case, the alaya consciousness and the afflicted mind are not the immediately preceding condition of the entering consciousnesses, because these two always exist, and therefore they cannot open the opportunity for other consciousnesses to arise through the power of cessation. Therefore, it is said, "the six consciousnesses." Those consciousnesses are not the immediately preceding condition when they are not yet produced, because their own essence is not yet produced, so they do not obstruct the opportunity for other consciousnesses to arise, like space. Nor are they in the state of being produced but not yet ceased, because if they have not ceased, they cannot find the opportunity for other consciousnesses to arise. When they themselves cease, they open the opportunity for the subsequent consciousness to arise. Therefore, they become its immediately preceding condition, and thus it is said, "immediately after cessation." That refers to not being interrupted by other consciousnesses of the same kind. It does not mean not being interrupted by other moments, because in the state of entering cessation samadhi, etc., even after a long time has passed since the mind before entering samadhi ceased, it becomes the immediately preceding condition of the mind immediately after arising from samadhi. It does not mean being interrupted by other consciousnesses, because the very consciousness that interrupts opens the opportunity for the subsequent consciousness to arise. Therefore, it is said, "immediately after cessation." In order to exclude other things such as the senses at the moment of cessation of the six consciousnesses, it is said, "consciousness." The entering consciousnesses become the immediately preceding condition of the consciousnesses that arise immediately after them and are of the same kind, therefore it is said, "the six consciousnesses." For those schools that believe that multiple consciousnesses do not arise simultaneously, when one consciousness exists without ceasing, there is no opportunity for other consciousnesses of the same or different kind to arise. Therefore, after one consciousness such as eye consciousness ceases, a different kind of consciousness such as mind consciousness arises.
