It is always associated with the afflicted mind that arises. This is what needs to be established here. Because of this, the *Compendium on the Great Vehicle* states: "That which constantly turns as an obstacle to the mind, viewing the true meaning, and arises at all times, is said to be ignorance that is unmixed." This is what is said. In the commentary, it says that it is an unmixed basis because it relies solely on the afflicted mind, like the unmixed qualities of a Buddha. So it is said. The *Explanation of the Hidden Meaning* states that because of this, other afflictions such as the view of self arise, and because it is a substance with its own nature, it is an unmixed capacity. This is how it is explained. Why does this rely solely on the afflicted mind? In response, the mind-consciousness cannot be its basis, because it sometimes ceases, while this arises constantly until the truth is seen. Furthermore, because this arises constantly, if it were associated with this mind-consciousness, it would always be only afflicted and would not become virtuous or neutral. For those reasons, the sense-consciousnesses are also not suitable as its basis. The all-ground consciousness is also only the ripened, unobscured, and neutral, so it is not suitable as its basis. Therefore, the consciousness on which unmixed ignorance relies is another consciousness called the afflicted mind. Furthermore, if there were no afflicted mind, the mind-consciousness would also have the fault of being no different from the five sense-consciousnesses. Thus, the co-emergent basis of the sense-consciousnesses is the senses that are simultaneous with itself, and its immediately preceding basis is the immediately preceding mind. The basis of the mind-consciousness is only the past, and it is unreasonable to not have a co-emergent basis, because it is contradicted by inference. How is it contradicted? Whatever is a consciousness that operates is one that has a co-emergent basis, like the sense-consciousnesses, the mind...

Furthermore, the manifestation of consciousness is also an entering consciousness, which is called the reason of the result. The eye and so on are not a common arising place for it, because after they change, the consciousness of mind does not change. Therefore, it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "When the faculties are harmed one by one, the mind and intellect are not harmed." The elders' saying that one to nine heart chambers are the support is also unreasonable, because it is harmed by inference. For example, whatever is the consciousness of mind does not rely on form, like the consciousness of mind in the formless realm. Whatever consciousness is thought to rely on heart chambers is also the consciousness of mind, which is considered a contradictory pervader. The ālaya-vijñāna is also not a common arising place for it, because it is the common cause of the six entering consciousnesses. Therefore, the consciousness of mind has a non-common, common arising support, because it is an entering consciousness, like eye consciousness. Moreover, if it is called mind because of the idea of always clinging to self, then there will also be the fault of an unestablished definition, because the entering consciousness sometimes ceases, and some do not have self-clinging. Furthermore, there will be no difference between quiescence and non-quiescence in the absorption of non-perception and the absorption of cessation, because both are equally just stopping the six aggregates, and there is no difference between the afflicted mind being stopped and not stopped. If there is an afflicted mind, then the noble ones are able to stop it, therefore the absorption of cessation is very quiescent because it is stopped, while ordinary beings cannot stop the afflicted mind, therefore the absorption of non-perception is not quiescent because it is with it. Therefore, there is a difference in the state of abiding between noble ones and non-noble ones. Furthermore, if there is no afflicted mind, then there is no self-grasping in the continuum of beings born in the realm of non-perception.
