Those who have no attachment to self also have no grasping at what is mine. Like us, those who focus on grasping at self also see attachment to self. As it is said, "If there is no seeing of 'I,' then no one is attached to self." Therefore, attachment to self is indeed present. If there is a view of self, it is natural for the thought 'I am' to arise, for without the thought 'I am,' no grasping at self is seen in anything. Therefore, pride is also indeed present. The Lord of Reasoning considers the view of self, the thought 'I am,' and delusion about self to be of the same meaning, and holds that attachment to self arises from these. As it is said, "All faults have this as their root; this is the view of the perishable aggregate; this is ignorance; there is attachment to that." And, "When one desires to be happy or not to be in suffering, whatever thought of 'I am' arises, it arises together with the view of sentient beings." Thus it is said. Thus, the five common ones and the four uncommon companions determine that there are only these nine mental factors. The five object-determinations do not arise; for example, desire is threefold: seeking, wanting to meet, and wanting not to be separated. The first is not possible, as it focuses on a distant object, while the mind focuses on what is near. It is also not the desire to meet, as it appears in the aspect of not being separated, nor is it the desire not to be separated, as that is accompanied by the fear of separation, which is not present in the mind. Aspiration also does not arise, as aspiration, being of the nature of certainty, is preceded by the cessation of doubt, while the mind always engages in the same essence, so doubt is impossible. Memory is also not, as it focuses on an object previously experienced, while the mind focuses on a substance not previously experienced. Samadhi is also not, for if the mind was previously distracted, and later the mind's mind is placed equally on one object, then there is samadhi, but the mind is not like that, as it always engages in the same essence without alternating between objects. There is also no wisdom other than the view of self, as the two substances of wisdom are similar.

Because it possesses (this nature). Among the afflictions, doubt and wrong view are both conceptually constructed, while mind is co-emergent, therefore it is absent. The near afflictions such as anger are only unwholesome in the desire realm, while mind is obscured and neutral in all three realms, therefore, it does not possess those (near afflictions). Sleep and regret are not present in the higher realms, therefore it does not possess them. Conceptualization and analysis themselves cause speech to arise, manifestly directed outwards, while mind looks inwards, therefore it does not possess them. That mind with the characteristics as described, except for three instances, follows along in all instances of virtue such as giving, non-virtue such as killing, and neutral states such as patience and conduct, because in those instances, there is no cause for this to revert. So, where does this revert? It reverts in three instances. For example, it does not arise when the supramundane path is manifesting, because that (supramundane path) is the antidote to the view of self, and it is contradictory to exist simultaneously with the view of self. It also does not arise when entering cessation. Because cessation is superior to the formless absorption of non-discrimination by blocking the afflicted mind. Those are the times of temporary reversion, and immediately after arising from the noble path and meditative absorption, it arises again from the seed of the view of self that exists in the alaya consciousness. It does not arise after obtaining the vajra-like samadhi of the no-more-learning stage, and after obtaining the eighth ground in the Great Vehicle, because in those instances, all the seeds of affliction have been abandoned. This is the time of ultimate reversion. If there is no mind when entering the noble path, then because there is no place for simultaneous arising, the uncontaminated consciousness of mind should also not arise, is that so? To this, some previous teachers say that when entering the noble path, the essence of mind itself does not revert, but rather the four afflictions that are associated with mind
