Because of the power of the Alaya-consciousness, these arise from it, being focused on the self, but not actually so. Why is it that solely by the power of the Alaya, this arises as the image of the self? Because the Alaya itself has the function of taking a body and abiding, etc., being in accordance with the self and the Dharma, or else, the entering consciousness and its concomitants should not be the object of this, because they sometimes cease, and this arises constantly, so the object cannot cease. The sense faculties such as the eye are also not suitable as the object of this, because in the formless realm, there would be the fault of not having this object. For external objects, there is no grasping of self or what belongs to self, so it is not suitable as the object of this. If it is said that in the state of having mind, it focuses on the entering consciousnesses, and in the absence of mind, it focuses on the material sense faculties, then in that case, this focusing on the object would be alternating, therefore, like the mind consciousness, it would only become unstable, which is also not acceptable. Thus, there is no other suitable object for this, therefore, the Alaya itself is established as the object of this. The companions of this are two types: common and uncommon. The first is the five ever-present [mental factors] such as feeling. The second is that it is associated with the four obscured and unspecified afflictions. What are those? They are the view of the aggregates as the self (薩迦耶見, सत्कार्यदृष्टि, satkāyadṛṣṭi, 身见), which views the Alaya as the self, and the clinging that desires not to be separated from the self grasped by it, and the pride that is conceited with "I", and the ignorance that makes one deluded about the self. Why does it have these four afflictions? If this did not have the view of the self, there would be no conceit, therefore it would be unreasonable to apply the term "mind" to this. Therefore, this has the view of the self as a companion. Without being deluded about the self, there would be no view of the self at all, therefore this has ignorance. If there is grasping of the self, then attachment to the self will inevitably follow, because Arhats, etc.
