Because it is unreasonable to apply a negative term to something that does not exist. For example, like a donkey having no horns. The reasoning that is well-known in treatises has been explained above. From the perspective of reasoning that is well-known in both treatises and the world, a summary determination is made: "The initial taking of birth and manifestation, seeds, actions, and bodily sensations, mindless constant absorption, and likewise, death and transference cannot be changed." Thus it is said. Regarding this, the concise meaning here is this: If the ālaya-vijñāna does not exist, then taking a body is impossible, manifestation is impossible, initial entry into the womb is impossible, seeds are impossible, actions are impossible, bodily sensations are impossible, mindless absorption is impossible, and the consciousness's death and transference are impossible, and so forth, faults would occur, which is unreasonable. Therefore, it should be understood that the ālaya-vijñāna exists. Among these, the three—taking a body is impossible, seeds are impossible, and death and transference are impossible—have already been explained in detail, so I will not elaborate further. If the ālaya-vijñāna exists, then sometimes simultaneous cognitions also arise, so would that lead to two minds arising simultaneously? If someone asks this, then that is thinking of something without fault as a fault. Because, when the five objects are simultaneously present, the five faculties are also unimpaired, and attention is also equally directed towards all objects, if two minds do not arise simultaneously, then it would be reasonable for one to arise first. However, that is not the case, because all the objects, faculties, and attention are equally present with powerful force, and it is unreasonable for the cause to be simultaneously present but the result to arise sequentially. If two consciousnesses cannot arise simultaneously, then the mental consciousness that clearly grasps the object would be impossible, like this: the objects of mental consciousness are four, namely, past, present, future, and unconditioned phenomena. Among these, the mental consciousness that cognizes the past, future, and unconditioned, because the object is not truly existent, it is not possible to clearly grasp it.

Moreover, that is because the object is hidden. If there are some consciousnesses that enter the same object together with the consciousnesses of the senses, then it is reasonable to clearly grasp by closely engaging with the manifest object. If two minds cannot arise simultaneously, then the consciousness that arises together with the sense consciousness is impossible, therefore, there cannot be a consciousness of mind that clearly grasps the object. Furthermore, if multiple consciousnesses do not arise simultaneously, then the aspects of the four actions cannot arise simultaneously. The four actions are: the awareness of the aspect of the container, the awareness of the aspect of the place, the awareness of the aspect of thinking "I", and the awareness of the aspect of the object. The first is the appearance of mountains, houses, dwellings, etc. The second is the appearance of the colored senses such as the eyes, etc., these are the aspects of the alaya consciousness. The third is that of afflictions. The fourth is the consciousness of the senses. These four awarenesses are considered to arise simultaneously in one instant, therefore, if any one of these four awarenesses does not exist, then the bodily actions of sentient beings, such as walking, etc., cannot be accomplished. If the awareness of the aspect of the container does not exist, then there will be no appearance of the road and streets, etc., to go to. If the awareness of the aspect of the place does not exist, then there will be no appearance of lifting and placing the feet, etc., with which to walk. If there is no awareness of thinking "I", then there will be no appearance of who is the walker. If there is no awareness of the aspect of the object, then there will be no awareness of the act of walking itself. If any one of these four awarenesses does not exist, the act of walking will not be completed, because if there is no appearance of the walker, there is no agent, so the act of walking cannot be completed. Similarly, when there is no appearance of the action of going to, and the agent with which to walk, and the action of what is the nature of walking, etc., then those do not exist either, therefore, the act of walking is not reasonable. Because these actions are very different, the appearance in one instant of one consciousness also

That is unreasonable. Furthermore, if there is no ālaya-vijñāna, then is the mind consciousness proper? Improper, etc., when discriminating towards other objects, the body's feelings, pleasure or pain, etc., will not appear in various ways, because the mind consciousness is distracted towards other objects, and there is no other consciousness that is the place of arising of those feelings. It is also unreasonable to think that way, because even when the mind is distracted towards other objects, lepers, etc., can see various bodily sensations. Furthermore, if there is no ālaya-vijñāna, then the samādhi of no-mind concentration is also unreasonable. For example, when entering into non-perception or cessation, consciousness will only become separated from the body, because there is no consciousness of entering, and other consciousnesses besides that are not accepted. At that time, separation from consciousness will only become death, which is also unreasonable, because the Blessed One said, "His consciousness is not separated from the body." Therefore, the scriptural and logical proofs for establishing the ālaya-vijñāna have been explained. Now, its divisions will be explained, which are generally three divisions and four divisions. The first is the three types of distinctions of the three habitual tendencies, such as: the habitual tendency of expression, the habitual tendency of the limb of existence, and the habitual tendency of the view of self. The first is also called the habitual tendency of elaboration, which is the seed from which the names of dharmas and persons and various expressions arise. The second is also called the habitual tendency of karma, from which various births of good and bad destinies arise. The third is the seed from which the grasping of "I" and "mine" arises. The four divisions are: division by projection, division by fruition, division by causality, and division by characteristic. The first is the newly perfumed habitual tendency of fruition. If it does not exist, then the condition of action takes the condition of consciousness.
