If it is admitted that there is non-omniscience, then what are the causes and conditions for the first noble path? To answer this question, it should be said that the stainless seeds that have existed in the ālaya-vijñāna from beginningless time, existing by virtue of their own nature, are nourished by hearing the Dharma, which is the cause of the very pure dharmadhātu, and thus grow more and more. Therefore, the stainless seeds that have the power and strength to generate the stainless path are the causal condition, and the path of union, the lord of the supreme Dharma, is the condition from which the first stainless path, the forbearance of knowing the Dharma of suffering, arises. Thus, the stainless seeds that have become powerful and strong generate the first stainless moment, and the moments from the path to the subsequent knowledge are extended, just as an arrow shot does not fall from the sky. After that, the later noble paths, such as the path of meditation, arise from the stainless seeds sown in the ālaya by the previous noble paths. This should be understood. Then, is this stainless seed not tainted by worldly mind? How can it become the homogeneous cause of the stainless path? Answer: The mind of hearing and attention that opens its door, although worldly and tainted, is equal to the transcendental wisdom, because it is attending to the dharmadhātu and admiring its aspect. That is to say, the Tathāgatas have realized the dharmadhātu as it is, and in order to make it understandable to others, they teach the Dharma, so the Buddha's teachings are the homogeneous fruit of realizing the dharmadhātu. Therefore, the intelligence that follows the teachings of the Tathāgata and practices its meaning properly is also the same as the wisdom of realizing the dharmadhātu in terms of object and aspect, just as a wise man clearly manifests and understands the characteristics of a certain great city.

For example, if someone describes the appearance of a city well to some people who have never seen it before, then the image of that city will appear in their minds in the same way as he understands it. Therefore, the mind that hears and contemplates is a mind without outflows, and its object and form are the same. Therefore, the imprints it leaves will also become a cause for sharing in the wisdom without outflows. How does this seed without outflows abide by its nature in the Alaya consciousness? It is because of reason. Like this seed without outflows, it refers to the ability to generate a mind with the form of suchness, without anything else. That ability abiding by its nature in the Alaya also means that the Alaya consciousness of a person with lineage arises from its own cause, possessing the ability to generate a mind that focuses on suchness. This is established through reason. Just as if the Alaya consciousness of a person with lineage does not arise from its own cause, possessing the ability to generate a mind that focuses on suchness, then even if it encounters causes and conditions such as hearing and contemplation, it is impossible for it to arise with the ability of that mind, because it is born with the nature of not being able to generate that mind from its own cause. For example, like the Alaya consciousness of a lineage that has been cut off. In that case, it will become what is called a lineage that has been cut off, and not one that possesses lineage. When it encounters causes and conditions such as hearing and contemplation, thereby becoming capable of generating a mind that focuses on suchness, then we know that it originally possessed the ability to generate that mind. For example, just as when we encounter causes and conditions such as water and fertilizer, we realize that a seed can produce a sprout, we know that it originally existed in the cause of the sprout. Therefore, when the Alaya consciousness itself abides from the beginning in the nature of being able to generate a mind that focuses on suchness, and when it encounters the cause of hearing, thereby arising with excellent ability, then it obtains the name of the so-called habit of hearing. The Alaya of a lineage that has been cut off
