If it is said that there is no imprint left that produces the result that is in accordance with and subsequent to quiescence itself, then it should be stated in response to this: There are two aspects of the lineage of the noble path: that which becomes the condition of the object and that which becomes the causal condition. The first is the element of reality, which is naturally pure. Because the noble paths of the three vehicles arise from meditating on this by focusing on either of the two aspects of selflessness, therefore, it is also said in this very text: Why is it called the element of reality? Because it is the cause of the Dharma of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. It is said. This, being free from all obscurations, is included in the enumeration of the Dharmakaya of the Tathagatas, and is said to possess the essence of the Tathagata. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: The thusness in all, though without distinction, is pure. Therefore, the Tathagata himself, all beings possess his essence. And also in the Uttaratantra: The body of the complete Buddha is for blossoming, and the thusness is without difference, and because there is lineage, all embodied beings constantly possess the essence of the Buddha. As it is said. That itself is also called the naturally abiding lineage, because it is the cause of the noble Dharmas in the manner described above, and because it is not accomplished by conditions, but exists from the beginning. That which has become the causal condition is the uncontaminated seed existing in the Alaya, abiding by the nature of Dharma. That itself is also called the habit of hearing, also called the distinction of the six sense bases, and also called the lineage that will increase. Why is it called the habit of hearing? Because the similar cause for realizing the extremely pure element of reality is to be nourished by the condition of hearing the Dharma of scripture, therefore it is called the habit of hearing. For example, just as the Alaya itself, from the beginning, abides in a state capable of producing desirable or undesirable results, and by means of virtuous or non-virtuous conditions, it is made capable, and therefore it is called a virtuous or non-virtuous habit. This is not to be newly accomplished by the condition of hearing, but rather the Hearers, those who solely proceed to peace

Because hearing the Dharma of the Great Vehicle from the Tathagata will also plant the habit of hearing the Great Vehicle in their continuums. In this way, because they have the lineage of the Great Vehicle's expansion, they should not only be allowed to enter into tranquility. Therefore, the sutra also says that the lineage of the Bodhisattvas is obtained by the nature of the difference of the six sense bases, and has come down from beginningless time. Why is it called the difference of the six sense bases? Because this is the distinguishing Dharma that distinguishes the six internal sense bases, which are the basis for establishing the name "sentient being," so it is called the difference of the six sense bases. How does it distinguish? For those who, after hearing the profound and vast Dharma, increase the habit of hearing, it is called the Great Vehicle lineage. For those who take the six internal sense bases as their object and think that they have this kind of meaning, they are called the lineage of the Great Vehicle Buddha, not the lineage of the Hearers or Solitary Buddhas. For those who, by hearing the Dharma that teaches the path of liberation alone, such as the benefits of Nirvana and the faults of Samsara, increase the habit of hearing, it is called the Lesser Vehicle lineage. And for those who take the internal six sense bases as their object, they are called the Hearers or Solitary Buddhas' Vehicle, or their lineage. Why is it called expansion? Because this lineage, through the nourishment of causes and conditions, will grow from small to medium, and from medium to large. As it is said in the sutra: "Relying on small habits, it will become medium habits. Relying on medium habits, it will become large habits, because it has the cause of hearing, thinking, and meditating many times." It is like what is said in the sutra. Furthermore, this undefiled seed of the difference of the six sense bases will also become the naturally abiding from beginningless time, and the two kinds of proper acceptance of causes and conditions. Among them, the first is not nourished by the cause of hearing.
