Therefore, these are not the same. Thus, the explanation of the three kinds of defilements being impermissible is complete. Now, the impermissibility of purification will be discussed. In this regard, if there is no ālaya-vijñāna, worldly purification is impermissible, because it is unreasonable to be free from attachment to desire, etc. Specifically, it is like this: if one has not separated from attachment to desire, one cannot obtain the mind that abides in the form realm. Therefore, when striving to become free from desire's attachment through the virtuous mind arising from the practice associated with the desire realm, that mind arising from the practice associated with the desire realm, because it does not arise and cease simultaneously with the mind abiding in the form realm, it cannot influence it, and therefore cannot become the seed of the mind abiding in the form realm. Moreover, the past mind abiding in the form realm, which is interrupted by many different streams of consciousness from many lifetimes, is also gone because it has passed, so it cannot become the seed of the present samāhita mind. Therefore, for a person who wants to be free from attachment to desire, because there is no seed of the samāhita mind, it is impossible for the samāhita mind to arise, and without the arising of the samāhita mind, it is impossible to be free from attachment to desire. Similarly, all the grounds of freedom from attachment itself should be applied accordingly. If one accepts the ālaya-vijñāna, then in the past life, on the ālaya of the samāhita mind, the seed influenced by the virtue arising from the practice associated with the desire realm can give rise to the samāhita mind, and therefore the stages of separation from attachment are reasonable. If there is no ālaya-vijñāna, then supramundane purification is also impermissible. As it is said in the scripture: 'Relying on the voice of others and individually attending to things as they are, from this cause, correct view arises.' What the Blessed One said is also impermissible without the ālaya-vijñāna. Among them, 'from the voice of others, right attention arises' means that having heard the Dharma from the Buddha, śrāvakas, etc., and having practiced its meaning as it should be, then the paths of practice of self-nature corresponding to the decisive factor arise.

The so-called "arising" refers to: How can the sequence be unreasonable for the transcendental uncontaminated wisdom and the non-existent alaya-vijñana of the so-called "individual being"? Because the first moment of the uncontaminated, which is called right view, is not reasonable for both its adhipati-pratyaya (dominant condition) and samprayuktaka-hetu (concomitant cause). Some schools say that the supreme dharma of the application path is its adhipati-pratyaya, but that is also unreasonable, because it itself has no cause of arising. If it is said to arise from the habit of hearing established by the attention to the sound of others, does the attention that thinks about its meaning from the sound of others arise from the ear consciousness of hearing the Dharma, or from the mind consciousness? Both of these have the habit of hearing. For this, when individually considering and attending to the meaning of those dharmas, the ear consciousness does not arise for a while, so it is unreasonable to instill the habit into the ear consciousness. Even if it is especially instilled into the mind consciousness, when the supreme dharma of the application path that actually leads to right view arises, the habit of hearing instilled in the mind consciousness, together with the habit, ceases and does not exist. How can the supreme dharma arise from its seed? Therefore, right view has no adhipati-pratyaya. The samprayuktaka-hetu is also non-existent, like this, the supreme dharma of the application path itself, because it does not arise and cease together with the transcendental path, and also does not arise and cease together with the attention to the sound of others, therefore the habit of hearing does not exist for it, so right view cannot arise from its seed, and there is no other basis for the seed. Without adhipati-pratyaya and samprayuktaka-hetu, right view will not arise, and without right view, purification is also unreasonable. According to the view that acknowledges alaya-vijñana, from what seed does that right view arise? Because alaya-vijñana is the cause of all afflicted dharmas, therefore those cannot be the cause of antidotes. The transcendental mind, because it has not arisen, therefore it can
