Because it does not exist, and also because consciousness is interrupted in the five states of mindlessness, it should not be considered as food for consciousness. Alaya-consciousness, however, because it exists in all realms and at all times, is suitable as food for the sentient beings of the three realms to abide in. It has been explained that rebirth should not be connected in a non-meditative state. Furthermore, if there is no alaya-consciousness, then it is not reasonable to connect rebirth to take birth in a meditative state after dying from this place, because connecting rebirth in a meditative state is the consciousness of that realm, which is the function of non-meditative defilement. If there is no alaya-consciousness, then there is no cause for the arising of such consciousness, i.e., the seed. Thus, the habitual tendencies of the afflictions of the meditative ground of the previous birth state are cut off and exhausted by the intervening desire realm birth, and the desire realm mind also does not have a share of the habitual tendencies of the higher realm afflictions, and the mind of the intermediate existence, whether virtuous or non-obscured and non-indicated, also does not have the habitual tendencies of the afflictions of the meditative ground. This is because they and the afflictions of the higher ground have not arisen and ceased simultaneously. Connecting rebirth in a meditative state requires the defiled mind of that ground, because the afflictions of the lower ground cannot manifest the birth of the higher ground, and one who has not separated from desire in the lower ground will not be born in the higher ground, and those who have separated from desire in that ground should also not enjoy the afflictions of that ground. Therefore, when one is born in the first dhyana, at that time, rebirth is connected by the defiled mind of that ground, and when one is born in the peak of existence, it is also connected by the afflictions of that ground, and so on should be known. It has been explained that rebirth should not be connected in a meditative state. A special examination of the formless realm: If there is no alaya-consciousness, then the sentient beings born in the four formless realms...

In the continuum, whatever beings are born with virtuous or afflicted minds will arise without a cause. For example, when the mind consciousness arises in conjunction with virtuous qualities such as faith, it is not reasonable to say that the mind consciousness itself possesses the seeds of those qualities. This is because there are no qualities such as faith that arise and cease simultaneously with itself to plant the seeds that allow itself and those qualities to arise. Furthermore, other schools do not accept that cause and effect occur simultaneously. Similarly, it cannot be said that previous mind consciousnesses that are afflicted or obscured and indeterminate possess the seeds of faith and so on, because they do not arise and cease simultaneously with faith and so on, and therefore do not have specific imprints of faith and so on. If they were to arise and cease simultaneously with faith and so on, they would become virtuous rather than afflicted or indeterminate. In that case, it would be the same as what needs to be proven. It is also not possible to say that the virtuous qualities previously born in the desire and form realms arise from those, because they are interrupted by many minds of different types. Because at that time there are no other consciousnesses, no sense consciousnesses, and the mind consciousness arises in conjunction with faith and so on, and because the alaya consciousness is not accepted. Therefore, the virtuous mind consciousnesses of beings born in the formless realms will arise without a cause. In that case, it would be extremely absurd for virtuous qualities such as faith to arise even in those who have severed their roots of virtue. Similarly, according to the reasoning described above, the afflicted minds of those born in the formless realms will arise without a cause. In that case, it would be extremely absurd for afflictions to arise even in arhats. Furthermore, if a noble non-returner born in that realm directly realizes the supramundane mind, then his cycle of existence will cease. Because if there is no alaya consciousness, there is no other mind that can serve as the basis for designating existence. The noble
