So, do attachment and the like plant seeds for the eye consciousness that arises together with them, or do they plant seeds for themselves? Or does the eye consciousness that arises together with them plant their own seeds for attachment and the like, or does it plant the seeds of attachment and the like for other entering consciousnesses? Or, the eye consciousness always plants those seeds (of attachment and the like) for subsequent similar (eye consciousnesses), because there is no other possibility. Regarding this, if according to the first case, then the eye consciousness that arises together with attachment and the like cannot be the place of seeds for the subsequent arising of attachment and the like, because when the subsequent attachment and the like arise, it has already passed and does not exist. Even if it is not the place where subsequent attachment and the like arise, it cannot be said that it has the seeds of attachment and the like, because the seed is the cause of producing the subsequent fruit that is in accordance with itself. The second case is also unreasonable, because attachment and the like are themselves mental factors, and each moment depends on the mind to arise, so they are impermanent, and instability itself is not the basis of habit, like lightning and sound, etc. For the same reason, it is also unreasonable to say that the eye consciousness that arises together with attachment and the like plants their habits for attachment and the like. It is also unreasonable to say that the eye consciousness that arises together with attachment and the like plants the habits of attachment and the like for other entering consciousnesses such as the ear, because the entering consciousnesses do not arise and cease together, because the object, sense faculty, and attention are different, so they are not related to each other, which has already been said. It is also unreasonable to say that the eye consciousness that arises together with attachment and the like plants those habits (of attachment and the like) for subsequent similar (eye consciousnesses), because it does not arise and cease together with them. Therefore, it is unreasonable to think that eye consciousness plants habits for attachment and the like.

No. It should also be understood by the same previous reasoning that the other consciousnesses, such as the consciousness of the eye, which intervene, are also not the basis of the predispositions of attachment, and so forth. Furthermore, if there were no ālaya-vijñāna, then when a defiled consciousness is born in the desire realm after dying from the state of non-perception, it would be born without a seed. This is because the previous seeds of desire-realm afflictions have ceased along with their location. And the previous mind of the intermediate state, which is of the same type, whether virtuous or morally neutral, has not arisen and ceased together with the afflictions, so it is not reasonable for them to have the seeds of those afflictions. Therefore, it is not reasonable to have anything other than the ālaya-vijñāna as the basis of the seeds of those afflictions, which are the cause of the arising of such defilements. Moreover, if there were no ālaya-vijñāna, then the first defiled mind that arises after arising from the noble path would arise from no seed. Thus, when the noble path is manifest, the other worldly active consciousnesses have ceased, so they cannot be the basis of the seeds of affliction, and the noble path itself should not be the place of the seeds of affliction, because it is liberated by its very nature and is the antidote to affliction. Therefore, if there were no ālaya-vijñāna, when the path of seeing arises, the seeds of all afflictions and near afflictions would be cut off, and thereafter, like an arhat, afflictions would never arise again. If that were the case, the path of meditation would be meaningless because the path of seeing itself liberates. If afflictions arise without seeds, then afflictions would also arise in arhats, which would be too extreme. Therefore, even when the noble path is manifest, there is the ālaya-vijñāna, which is the place of the seeds from which later afflictions arise. The impossibility of the defilement of affliction has been explained. It will be explained that the defilement of action is not permissible.
