Some touch the tusk, some touch the ear, some touch the leg, some touch the tail, some touch the spine. When they are asked what an elephant is like, some say it is like a plow, some say it is like a pestle, some say it is like a thin tube, some say it is like the base of a mortar, some say it is like a broom, some say it is like a stone. Similarly, because they do not understand these two dependent originations, ignorance is like being blind. Regarding the nature of the alaya-consciousness, which is like an elephant, and those who do not understand cause and effect, some think it is self-nature, some think it arises from previous actions, some think there is a lord, some think there is a self, some think it arises without cause, some think there is a maker, some think there is an enjoyer. In short, the nature of the alaya-consciousness is the maturation consciousness, the place of all seeds, which includes all bodies of the three realms and all beings. Thus it is said. Therefore, how the alaya-consciousness is established as the nature of the Great Brahma has been explained. Now, its proof will be stated. How is it shown that the alaya-consciousness, which has the names and characteristics as described above, exists as something different from the acting consciousnesses? Through scripture and reasoning. First, the scripture is as follows: For example, in the Great Vehicle Abhidharma Sutra, it says: "The realm of beginningless time, is the basis of all dharmas, because it exists, all beings, and nirvana can be attained." And again in the same, it says: "All dharma seeds, all seed consciousness is alaya, therefore the alaya consciousness, I have declared to the noble ones." Thus it is said. Among them, the meaning of the first verse is: The so-called "realm of beginningless time" refers to all afflictive aspects of the

And, it holds the seeds of both the defiled and the purified aspects. Among them, what is the seed of the defiled aspect? It is the cause and condition of all defiled dharmas, and therefore, due to its existence, one will obtain the suffering of birth and death in the cycle of the five realms. This is the basis for what is to be established in the present context, namely, the element that becomes the basis of all defiled dharmas and from which all beings arise, is none other than the alaya-vijnana, the all-ground consciousness that contains all seeds. What is the seed of the purified aspect? It is the basis or cause and condition of all purified dharmas, and when it exists, nirvana will ultimately be attained, because through gradually familiarizing oneself with it through hearing, thinking, and meditating, etc., stainless wisdom such as the path of seeing will arise. Holding this very essential point, in the commentary on the Uttaratantra, this verse is also cited as the basis of the Tathagatagarbha. Alternatively, the term "element of beginningless time" refers to the alaya-vijnana, because its continuum is without beginning. The element has the meaning of cause, and this is also the cause of all contaminated dharmas. This is the all-seed of all defiled dharmas, and the contaminated and uncontaminated purified seeds of the mundane and supramundane also depend on it, therefore, it is the basis of all dharmas. It is said that all defiled and purified dharmas arise depending on it, what does this mean? If it did not exist, then the three defilements of affliction, karma, and birth would not be possible, nor would the two purities of mundane and supramundane be possible, because there is no other basis for their seeds. Therefore, it is the basis of all defiled and purified dharmas. That very essential point.

Because it has been embraced, because it exists, all beings and even the cessation of suffering, Nirvana, can be attained, as it is said. Among these, the first scripture shows the meaning of the Alaya-consciousness, and the second shows both the name and the meaning. "I have explained to the noble ones," refers to explaining to the Bodhisattvas who have entered into the attainment of the wisdom of all aspects, because they also delve deeper into understanding what is to be known, and apart from this, it is not easy to understand all that is to be known. Others merely understand. These are temporarily the scriptures. If even those who temporarily follow faith do not believe in illogical scriptures, what need is there to mention those who follow the Dharma? Therefore, some reasoning will be briefly discussed below. There are two types of reasoning: reasoning that is famous in treatises, and reasoning that is famous in both treatises and the world. Regarding the first type of reasoning, the *Compendium on the Great Vehicle* states: "If the Alaya-consciousness, established in this way, does not exist, then in this way, the purification of all afflictions is impossible, the afflictions of afflictions, the afflictions of karma, and the afflictions of life are also impossible. The purification of the mundane and the supramundane is also impossible." As it is said, it should be understood through the two reasonings of the impossibility of all afflictions and the impossibility of purification. The impossibility of all afflictions is further understood through three faults: the six aggregates cannot serve as the basis for the habitual tendencies of afflictions such as attachment, the first affliction immediately after death from the realm of non-perception has no seed, and the mundane mind immediately after arising from the supramundane path is without seed. Among these, the first is: if the Alaya-consciousness does not exist, then the entering six consciousnesses cannot serve as the basis for the seeds of afflictions such as attachment, therefore they will never arise, because there is no cause. Why are the entering consciousnesses not suitable as the basis for the habitual tendencies of attachment, etc.? Because, for example, the eye consciousness cannot serve as the basis for the seeds of attachment, etc., like this.
