because it would lead to not depending on the cause of opening. Also, in the "Explanation of Hidden Meanings," it says: If it is one, like the alaya consciousness, the habits, etc., would also become unobscured and unindicated. In that case, it is not reasonable for good and non-good dharmas to arise from the seeds of unobscured and unindicated, therefore it is not one either. Such a statement is not seen as reasonable. It is not contradictory for various good and non-good dharmas to arise from unobscured and unindicated habits, because the scriptures themselves have shown this through the example of the juice of the tsikgu plant. In that case, both the view that the substance is one and the view that it is different are unreasonable because they are harmed by reasoning. The characteristic can be examined by reasoning to be different, therefore it is only different. Do the habits that exist in the alaya consciousness exist separately and independently like the wrinkles of a mushroom? Or do they exist as one taste like water and milk mixed together? What will happen from that? If it is like the first case, then the fault of stating that the alaya consciousness and the habits are different still remains. If it is like the second case, then it is also unreasonable for them to produce various different fruits separately. To this, it should be said: Are you arguing from the perspective of substance? Or are you arguing from the perspective of characteristic? If it is like the first case, then those various habits do not exist as separate substances, nor are they mixed into one, because they have not been established as substances. If it is like the second case, then these cannot be established as one characteristic, because if the cause of opening is also established by one, and the fruit of maturation, etc., also produces only one, then if the habits established by non-virtues such as desire and virtues such as faith are one, then their maturation will also produce only one, therefore the actions of accepting and rejecting good and evil will become meaningless. Therefore, the habits established by good and non-good are only different characteristics, because they are established by different causes of opening, and because the fruit of maturation produces what is desired and undesired separately. Therefore, the various fruits, good and non-good, desired and undesired, etc., are clearly

Because of this, it can be inferred that in the ālaya-vijñāna, there exist many seeds that produce these different fruits, and these seeds have different characteristics. Because these various fruits cannot arise without a cause, and the ability to produce these fruits is called habit. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "Because different fruits are seen, the various actions have different abilities, and differences are inferred accordingly." As it is said. So, are the habits left by good and non-good also exist in the nature of good or non-good? To this, some Tibetan teachers say that the habits of good and non-good, because they are respectively the factors that produce desirable and undesirable vipāka, and are associated with the subsequent good and non-good, so they are good and non-good. But this is not reasonable, because it contradicts the scriptures and reasoning. First, the reasoning is as follows: the habit left by good is not good, because it is not the antidote to non-good, such as the afflicted mind. The habit left by non-good is also not non-good, because it is not the companion for generating good, such as the vipāka-vijñāna. These reasons are not unestablished. For example, it cannot be said that something that exists simultaneously in the same continuum with something is the contradiction or antidote of that thing, such as the vipāka-vijñāna and the afflicted mind. The habits of good and non-good also exist simultaneously in the same continuum with the dharmas of good and non-good, this is the setting of the pervasion of contradiction. It is also not uncertain, for example, it cannot be absolutely determined that what is not a dissimilar class of good dharma is a non-good dharma, nor is what is not a dissimilar class of non-good dharma a good dharma, such as the unstated dharmas. The habits left by non-good and good are also good and non-good respectively.
