Present knowledge will also become an obstacle to those habitual imprints on oneself. If that is the case, others' minds and mental events will arise in oneself, therefore all sentient beings will become one continuum. The lineage of the noble path is also just a slight thinning of obscurations. Saying that the first noble path has no causal conditions is also unreasonable. Because it is said that "the naturally abiding lineage is the difference of the six sense bases," and because all schools assert that all minds and mental events arise from four conditions. What comes from the 'Collection of Determinations' is that it is only because the obscurations are thin that it is shown to have the seed of the uncontaminated. This view is said to be constantly capable. In this regard, the 'Exposition of the Hidden Meaning' is to prove that the abiding of habitual imprints by nature is reasonable. However, I realize that analyzing whether habitual imprints abide by nature or are newly produced is actually analyzing what does not exist. If the dharma called habitual imprint, like the attainment asserted by the Vaibhashikas and others, were substantially established, then it would be reasonable to analyze whether it exists from the beginning or is newly produced by a cause. Otherwise, it would not be reasonable to be substantially established. Here, it is not asserted that habitual imprints are substantially established, but here it is merely a designation that the power to generate all defiled dharmas is called habitual imprint. Just as that power cannot be analyzed as being one with or different from the alaya, it also cannot be designated as abiding by nature from the beginning or as being newly produced by conditions. However, only whether this alaya itself abides as capable from the beginning or whether it is newly produced with power by conditions is something that can be analyzed. When analyzed in this way, it is reasonable to say that this consciousness of the alaya abides as capable from the beginning to generate all defiled dharmas. What is the meaning of abiding in that way from the beginning? It means that from its own cause, it arises as a nature capable of being the cause of all defiled dharmas, not like the chief of the Samkhyas.

It is not the case that it exists as such from the beginning without being made by anyone. Why is it born as such from its own cause? If this (alaya-vijñana) is produced by a cause as a nature that cannot be the cause of some defiled dharmas, then even if it encounters conditions, it cannot be the cause of those dharmas, because it is its nature not to produce those dharmas, because it is born as such from its own cause. The nature of things cannot be changed by conditions, because the dharma-nature of dharmas cannot be disturbed by anyone. Even if this (alaya-vijñana) cannot be the cause of some defiled dharmas, it is unreasonable to say that therefore it possesses the seeds of all dharmas. In that case, it is established that the alaya-vijñana abides by its dharma-nature as capable of producing all defiled dharmas. If so, this (alaya-vijñana) is born as capable by its dharma-nature without depending on the agent, therefore it becomes not produced as capable by the agents. If so, it becomes a non-agent, because no distinction has been made. If you say so, this fault does not exist. For example, if a barley seed itself is not born from its own cause as a nature capable of producing sprouts, then even if it encounters conditions such as water and fertilizer, it will not become capable of producing sprouts, like charcoal. Therefore, although the seed abides from the beginning as capable of producing sprouts, just as conditions such as water and fertilizer make the ability to produce sprouts more powerful, the alaya-vijñana itself, although it has the ability to produce fruit from the beginning, the agents make it possess a more excellent ability to produce that fruit. In this way, afflictions such as attachment and virtuous dharmas such as faith cause the alaya-vijñana to abide from the beginning in a state capable of producing desirable and undesirable fruits, and then they cause it to have a more excellent ability to produce those fruits, therefore they leave good or bad imprints on the alaya.
