It is called "impregnation." If one merely considers that habits exist in the manner of Dharma-nature, it is not wrong to say that this is merely the impregnation of the impregnators; but if one considers the excellent power and the unprecedented new arising that it possesses, it is also not greatly wrong to say that this is newly impregnated. However, the thoughts of those former teachers seem to be examining whether there is another Dharma called "habit" that exists from the beginning or is newly produced, therefore, this cannot be considered reasonable in any way. The establishment of how impregnation occurs has been explained. Now, what is the nature of what is impregnated should be examined. Regarding this, as mentioned before, the basis of what is to be impregnated, which has specific characteristics, and the impregnators arise and cease simultaneously in the same continuum, relying on the impregnators, and the potential to produce results that are in accordance with this from the basis of what is to be impregnated, this cannot be said to be either itself or anything else, this is also called habit, also called seed, also called potential. It is also said that, in the *Summary of the Great Vehicle*, it says: "What is habit? What is meant by saying habit? That which is the cause of the arising of that Dharma, arising and ceasing simultaneously with it, is called what is meant. For example, sesame seeds impregnated with flowers, the sesame seeds and flowers arise and cease simultaneously, but the sesame seeds arise as the cause of that different fragrance; also, like those who practice desire, etc., the habits of desire, etc., arise and cease simultaneously with desire, etc., but the mind is the cause of that; also, like those who have heard much, the habits of having heard much, arise and cease simultaneously with hearing and thinking, but the mind is the cause of that speech. Just as the one who is possessed by such habits is called a nominalist, so too, one should view the Alaya consciousness in the same way." That is what is said. Among these, what precedes "what is meant" and so on is the meaning. With "for example" and so on, it shows the two types of metaphors that are famous in the world and in the treatises. Among these, the flowers and sesame seeds

These examples are well-known in the world. Attachment and so on are well-known in the treatises. Among them, the first example is consistent with the aspect of complete affliction. The so-called "those who have heard much" and so on are examples consistent with complete purification. The so-called "completely controlled by habit" and so on, is to combine the example with the meaning, thereby making a conclusion. Regarding the analysis of whether habit and Alaya are the same or different, it is also mentioned therein: In the Alaya consciousness, are those seeds of completely afflicted dharmas each independent? Or do they not exist independently? In this regard, with those seeds existing therein, they are neither different in substance, nor not different. However, the special Alaya consciousness that has the power to generate them is called having the ability to generate all seeds. In this regard, the meaning is this: Whatever is the seed of completely afflicted dharmas is not something that is substantially different from Alaya consciousness. Because they cannot be form, they will become the nature of mind and mental factors. If so, then the mind stream of sentient beings will become multiple. If it is said that just as multiple mental factors arise simultaneously, it will not become multiple streams, that is not correct. Because mental factors arise depending on a single order. If it is said that just as multiple entering consciousnesses arise simultaneously in one stream, it will not become multiple streams, that is not correct. Because the entering consciousnesses depend on one Alaya consciousness. If the habits of entering are substantially different from Alaya, then they will not depend on Alaya and arise freely, therefore they will inevitably become multiple streams. These habits are also not the same entity as Alaya consciousness, because Alaya consciousness is the ultimate essence of completely matured completely afflicted habits, just as it has no ability to produce other Vipaka results again, the habits of karma also inevitably have no ability to produce Vipaka results. Moreover, like Alaya, habits also become Vipaka results produced by the pulling of past karma.
