Therefore, they consider there to be no fault. The basis upon which influence should be exerted has been explained. Now, how the influencers influence the basis to be influenced will be discussed. Among these, the influencers and the basis to be influenced arise and cease together in the same continuum. Through this means, even if the influencer itself ceases, it still leaves behind the capacity to produce results similar to itself later on. This is the meaning of imprinting habits. For example, when sesame seeds and flowers are placed together, even if the flowers wither, the sesame seeds will emit the fragrance of the flowers. Therefore, it is evident that the flowers leave behind the capacity to produce such a fragrance on the sesame seeds. Regarding the manner of imprinting habits, the earlier teachers had three views, as follows: Some say that habits do not depend on influencers, but exist inherently in the ālaya from the beginning. The influencers merely nourish it and increase its power. Others say that habits are only newly produced and do not exist inherently. For example, on sesame seeds and other things, flowers and other things newly impart fragrance, but inherent fragrance is not seen. Still others say that some habits exist inherently and need to be fully nourished, while others are newly produced by the influencers. Among these, the produced habits are the dominant cause of the inherently existing habits, and both are the causal conditions for the results. This is what they think. Among these, regarding the first view, some argue as follows: If desire and other influencers only nourish the inherently existing habits and do not produce new habits, then they will not become the causal conditions of the ālaya-vijñāna. If this is the case, it contradicts what is said in the *Compendium on the Great Vehicle* (Mahāyānasaṃgraha), which states: "Just as the ālaya-vijñāna is the cause of all defiled dharmas, so too, all defiled dharmas are established as the causal conditions of the ālaya-vijñāna." This is what they say. But this is not the case, because they completely nourish habits of the same kind.

The co-existing condition is the cause, and the nurturing of dissimilar predispositions is the dominant condition. It is said that, like sesame seeds and other things, one does not see the fragrance of flowers existing in them by nature. It is not so, because garlic and stones, even when in contact with flowers, do not absorb the fragrance, so those things do not have the ability to absorb fragrance by nature, while sesame seeds are known to have fragrance existing in them by nature. Otherwise, even if they come into contact with flowers, they should not absorb fragrance at all, like garlic and other things. This is how they answer. On the second point, they also argue as follows: If predispositions do not exist by nature but are newly produced, then the alaya-consciousness should also not have newly produced predispositions after coming into contact with other alaya-consciousnesses, and the noble path should also not have experienced arising below the path of application, so there is no need for new predispositions. The alaya-consciousness and the first noble path should become causeless. For predispositions that exist by nature, the seeds of the alaya-consciousness that exist by nature and the seeds of the uncontaminated give rise to the alaya-consciousness and the first noble path, so there is no fault. This is how they refute. To this, those who admit that predispositions are newly produced say that this fault does not exist, because the consciousness that focuses on the internal sense bases also focuses on the alaya-consciousness, so the alaya-consciousness arises from its allocated predispositions, and the lineage of the noble path is not uncontaminated. In whichever continuum the seeds of the two obscurations can be abandoned, that is the lineage of the Bodhisattva. In whichever continuum only the obscuration of afflictions can be abandoned, that is the lineage of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. In whichever continuum the seeds of both obscurations cannot be abandoned, that is the lineage of those without lineage. And the first noble path does not have a co-existing condition. The statement that minds and mental factors arise from the four conditions is also with reference to the continuum, and it is not definitive. Therefore, there is no fault as stated above. This is how they answer. To this, others say that it is unreasonable for the consciousness that abides in the alaya-consciousness to produce its predispositions. If that were the case, the
