Recognizing it as a cause of disturbance, one cultivates the formless absorptions in order to definitely emerge from consciousness. That is, first seeing form and obstructive consciousness as coarse, one abandons it with the consciousness of space. Having abandoned that, one attains the sphere of infinite space. After that, in order to abandon the consciousness of space itself, one abandons the consciousness of consciousness. Having abandoned that, one attains the sphere of infinite consciousness. After that, seeing the consciousness of consciousness also as a fault, one abandons it with the consciousness of nothingness. Having abandoned that, one attains the sphere of nothingness. After that, seeing fault even in the consciousness of nothingness, one abandons it with the consciousness of neither perception nor non-perception. Having abandoned that, one attains the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. The consciousness of definitely emerging from this has no other cause than not realizing the realm of phenomena. Therefore, there is no other worldly state above this. Thus, the sphere of infinite space is: at the time of application, the consciousness of form and obstruction is completely destroyed, and at the time of the actual practice, the one-pointedness of mind that manifests itself, together with its concomitants. The sphere of infinite consciousness is: the consciousness that contemplates "space is infinite" is also contemplated as "consciousness is also infinite," thereby manifesting itself. The sphere of nothingness is: contemplating that "there is nothing to be grasped," thereby manifesting itself. The sphere of neither perception nor non-perception is: perception is disease, boils, and arrows. Non-perception is complete delusion. Neither perception nor non-perception is peaceful and excellent, thus contemplating, thereby manifesting the one-pointedness of mind together with its concomitants. These meditative stabilizations and formless realms that are afflicted are the one-pointedness of mind that corresponds to the afflictions of their own level. There are four types of these: those with strong desire are those that correspond to the desire to taste the pleasure of meditative stabilization. Those with strong views are those that generate views such as discrimination of the past extreme. Those with strong pride are: ཁ

The meditation that is content without having attained excellence. The one with much doubt is: doubting whether the state one is in is the path to liberation. These are like rotten seeds, and will not produce fruition. Therefore, it is not a meditation of favorable conditions, but is merely called meditation because it resembles meditation. Pure meditation is: the one-pointed virtue, together with its concomitants, that is not defiled by the afflictions of its own realm. It has four aspects: declining aspect, abiding aspect, excelling aspect, and decisive aspect. The first is: after a pure meditation, afflictions of one's own realm or lower realms arise, corresponding to it. The second is: after it, another pure meditation that is the same as one's own realm is induced. The third is: after it, other pure meditations of higher realms are obtained. The fourth is: after it, the path that transcends the world is induced. The peak of existence does not have the excelling aspect, because there is no other realm above it. Know that the others also each have four aspects. The meditation that directly realizes the aspects of truth, and the formless absorptions, are called uncontaminated. These four meditations are distinguished by establishing three things: the divisions of limbs, the number, and the certainty of the order. First, is the difference of limbs. The meaning of each division, and the determination of the number, these three. The first is: the first dhyana has five limbs, namely: investigation, analysis, joy born of detachment, bliss, and one-pointedness of mind. The second has four limbs, namely: inner clarity, joy and bliss born of concentration, and one-pointedness of mind. The third has five limbs, namely: mindfulness, awareness, equanimity, bliss, and one-pointedness of mind. The fourth has: pure mindfulness of equanimity, feeling that is neither pleasure nor pain, and one-pointedness of mind. The second is: the investigation of the first dhyana is coarse desire. It has the aspect of seeking "the first dhyana is peaceful." Analysis is: after that, it has the aspect of examining the differences in detail by way of the amount of afflictions, the length of life, and so on. These two are the limbs of the antidote.
