That is, for the desire of the desire realm, anger, and unpleasantness, etc., which are the opponents of the first dhyana, it is for the sake of eliminating them. Joy and happiness born of separation are the limbs of merit, because they can benefit the body and mind of the meditator. One-pointedness of mind is the limb of the place, and relying on it, the limbs of antidotes and merits such as investigation and analysis can arise. Similarly, for the second dhyana, inner purity of the nature of mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity is the antidote limb, in order to eliminate the opponents of the second dhyana such as investigation and analysis. Joy and happiness born of samadhi are the limbs of merit. For the third dhyana, the mindfulness of not forgetting the object of samadhi, and the awareness of observing lethargy and excitement, and the equanimity of making the mind dwell equally, are the antidote limbs, because they can eliminate the opponents of the third dhyana such as joy. Happiness without joy is the limb of merit. For the fourth dhyana, mindfulness and pure equanimity are the antidote limbs, because they can eliminate the opponents of the fourth dhyana such as happiness. Feeling equanimity is the limb of merit. Why does the first dhyana have three kinds of mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity, but it is not established as an antidote limb? Because although the first dhyana has mindfulness, etc., it is overcome by investigation and analysis, and cannot function with its own nature, so it is not said to be an antidote limb. And the second dhyana, although it functions with its own nature, is suppressed by joy, so it is not declared with its own name, but is declared with the name "inner purity". The third dhyana is liberated from the pervasive bondage of joy, so mindfulness, etc. are declared with their own names. The fourth dhyana is free from all the faults of dhyana, so mindfulness and equanimity are indicated by the word "purity". So, what is the difference between the first dhyana and the second dhyana? It is the difference between having and not having the desire for investigation and analysis, and there is a difference in samadhi.

There are differences between completeness and incompleteness in (different) places (positions). If asked, what is the difference between the second and third dhyanas? Due to the difference between joy not being separated from desire and being separated, there is a difference between benefiting (beings) being completely incomplete and complete. If asked, what is the difference between the third and fourth dhyanas? Due to the difference between not being liberated from the faults of dhyana and being liberated, there is a difference between truly pure incompleteness and completeness. Why is the first dhyana called having joy and happiness born from solitude? Because its joy and happiness are born from merely separating from the desire of the desire realm and evil unwholesome dharmas such as harm. Why is the second dhyana called having joy and happiness born from samadhi? Because its joy and happiness are born from the complete perfection of samadhi separated from investigation and analysis. If asked, what is the nature of the joy and happiness of the first and second dhyanas? To this, the Vaibhashikas say: Joy is the calming of the feeling of the wheel of mind consciousness, and happiness is extreme pliancy. Some Sutra masters say: Joy is the same as before, and happiness is the calming of the feeling of the wheel of sense consciousness, because the sutra says: Happiness is experienced by the body. Extreme pliancy should not be happiness, because in the fourth dhyana, extreme pliancy is very superior, but it is not said that happiness is a limb. Here, as summarized, the calming of the feeling of the wheel of mind consciousness itself, because it benefits including the wheel of mind consciousness, is called joy, and because it is in accordance with samadhi, it focuses inward and benefits the body including the senses, so it is called happiness, but these two are not different entities. In the third dhyana, the calming of the feeling of the wheel of mind consciousness itself, because it is completely grasped by mindfulness and equanimity, it does not perform the action of mental agitation, therefore it is not called joy, but looking inward, it benefits the body including the senses, so it is called happiness. The third question is: Why are the dhyanas determined to be five limbs and four limbs? Abandoning harm is the limb of the antidote, accomplishing benefit is the limb of benefit, and the limb of the place of both.
