It is not done because it is not needed since it has already separated from the near attainment. The contaminated actual practices do not act as enemies of what is to be abandoned by one's own level and higher levels because they are bound by desire for one's own level and are inferior to higher levels. Therefore, they are merely paths for dwelling in bliss in the present life and manifesting qualities, but not paths for separating from desire. The uncontaminated actual practices, because they act as enemies of one's own level and higher levels, are both paths for separating from desire and paths for manifesting qualities and dwelling in bliss in the present life. The near attainments, because they only act as enemies of the lower levels, are only paths for separating from desire, and because they do not include the limbs, they are not paths for manifesting qualities, and because they involve effort to abandon unfavorable factors, they are also not paths for dwelling in bliss in the present life. The first dhyana has only the actual practice and two special ones, the first of which is: with the limb of countering investigation and analysis, a one-pointed mind that is completely separated from desire for desire, together with its concomitants, possessing the limb of the benefit of joy and bliss born from solitude. The second is: with the limb of countering analysis, a one-pointed mind that is even more separated from desire from investigation, together with its concomitants, possessing equanimity. Among the five limbs of the first dhyana, investigation is the coarsest, so even without separating from desire from the first dhyana, it can be abandoned. Therefore, the first dhyana has two types, only the actual practice and the special one, which differ in whether they have separated from desire for the coarse limb of their own level or not. The limbs of the second dhyana and above cannot be abandoned without separating from desire from their own level, so they do not have the distinction of only and special. The second dhyana is: with the limb of inner clarity countering investigation and analysis, a one-pointed mind that is even more separated from desire, together with its concomitants, possessing the limb of the benefit of joy and bliss born from concentration. The third dhyana is: with the limb of mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity countering joy, a one-pointed mind that is even more separated from desire, together with its concomitants, separated from joy and bliss.

possessed by the hand of bliss and benefit. The fourth dhyana is: with mindfulness and pure equanimity as the limbs of antidote, the one-pointedness of mind, greatly distinguished by being free from attachment to bliss, together with its concomitants, possessing feeling of equanimity as the limb of benefit. Thereupon, first the yogi, seeing the desire for sensual pleasures and harm as the root of all strife and suffering, abandons the desire for sensual pleasures and harm by contemplating and examining the faults of sensual pleasures. Having abandoned them, one obtains the first dhyana, which has joy and bliss born of solitude. Thereafter, seeing that investigation and analysis disturb the mind-stream and are discordant, one abandons them with great inner clarity. Having abandoned them, one obtains the second dhyana, which has joy and bliss born of samadhi. Thereafter, seeing that joy also agitates the mind and is contrary to samadhi, one abandons it with mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity. Having abandoned it, one obtains the third dhyana, which has the essence of bliss without joy. Thereafter, seeing that bliss also causes change in the mind and is discordant to samadhi, one abandons it with mindfulness and pure equanimity. Having abandoned it, one obtains the fourth dhyana, which has feeling of equanimity, having abandoned both bliss and suffering. Thus, the discordant factors of dhyana are of three kinds: great, middling, and small. The first is desire for sensual pleasures and harm, which obstruct those who have not attained dhyana from attaining it. The second is investigation and analysis, which obstruct those who have attained it from becoming superior. The third is joy and bliss, which obstruct the mind from becoming supremely workable. Thereupon, separation from the great discordant factor is the first dhyana. Separation from the middling is the second and third. Separation from the small is the fourth, therefore the fourth is the supreme workability of mind because of separation from discordant factors. Thus, if one is free from attachment to all feelings that cause change, then the yogi, by taking perception itself as a sign of the object, the continuum
