It has the aspect of wishing to be free from afflictions such as greed. Or, it has the aspect of equanimity towards all beings, near, far, and in between. Secondly, there are three divisions: focusing on sentient beings, focusing on phenomena, and without focus. The first is focusing on truly existent sentient beings, wishing them to be free from suffering, etc., which is that of ordinary beings. The second is focusing on merely the aggregates of phenomena, which are nominally designated as sentient beings, which is that of noble Hearers and Solitary Realizers who realize the selflessness of the person. The third is focusing on the aggregates as not having a true nature, like illusions, merely nominally designated as sentient beings. This is that of Bodhisattvas and Buddhas who realize the selflessness of phenomena. Thirdly, the object is that of outsiders and Hearers and Solitary Realizers, who meditate by focusing on sentient beings as the antidote to harmful thoughts, harm, displeasure, and attachment and aversion, respectively. As it is said in the Treasury: "The immeasurable ones are four, for the sake of the antidote to harmful thoughts, etc." And it is said: "The field of activity is the desired sentient beings." The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas focus on all sentient beings who act in the three realms, and especially the object of compassion is those who rejoice in both samsara and nirvana, and who possess all the opposing factors of the six perfections. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The Thus-Gone One abides there, like the lord of mountains abiding on the high peak, he looks upon beings. If compassion arises for beings who rejoice in peace, what need to mention beings who rejoice in existence?" And it says: "Loving-kindness arises for the miserly, loving-kindness arises for the unruly, loving-kindness arises for all who quarrel, loving-kindness arises for the heedless, loving-kindness arises for those who are dependent on external objects, and compassion arises for those who are manifestly attached to wrong views." These are applied in order to the opposing factors of the six perfections. Again, in the same text it says: "Overcome by the raging fire of enemies, oppressed by suffering, obscured by darkness, entering the difficult path, fully endowed with great bonds, attached to food mixed with great poison, having completely lost the way, entering the wrong path, beings with little strength, compassion arises for them." Among these, the raging fire refers to attachment to the pleasures of desire.

Being controlled by demons is being obstructed by demons when engaging in virtue. Those oppressed by suffering are those who have fallen into evil realms. Those obscured by darkness are those who are ignorant of the differences in karmic results. Those who have fully entered the difficult path are those who have cut off their lineage. Those who possess great bondage are those whose minds are bound by the views of permanence and annihilation. Being attached to great food mixed with poison is those who savor the bliss of meditative absorption. Those who have completely lost the path are those who possess pride. Those who have entered the wrong path are those of uncertain lineage who have entered the Lesser Vehicle. Those who are weak are those bodhisattvas whose accumulations are not yet complete; these are the objects of bodhisattvas' compassion. Fourth, the method of cultivation is: loving-kindness, compassion, and joy, these three, first cultivate by focusing on friends, then on neutral people, and finally on enemies. Wishing that one's only child and one's enemies may all encounter happiness, wishing that they may be free from suffering, etc., when one becomes equal to this, one is skilled. Equanimity is: first cultivate by relying on the side of ordinary people, and finally when one is equal towards friends and enemies, and does not generate attachment or hatred, one is skilled. Fifth, the benefits of cultivation are: In the Samadhiraja Sutra, it says: In those pure lands filled with hundreds of thousands of billions of beings, whatever immeasurable kinds of offerings there may be, offering them daily to the supreme person is not comparable to the count and share of loving-kindness. Thus it is said. In the Ugradatta Sutra, it says: Having equal loving-kindness towards all sentient beings, constantly holding the mind of omniscient wisdom, not abandoning sentient beings with compassion, not being weary in samsara with joy, abandoning all faults with great equanimity. Thus it is said. In the Ratnavali, it also says: Gods and humans become loving, and they are also protected, their minds are at ease, they obtain much happiness, they are unharmed by poison and weapons, they obtain benefits without effort, they will be born in the Brahma world, even if they do not attain liberation, they will obtain the eight qualities of loving-kindness. Thus it is said. Sixth, the meaning of the words is: Because it focuses on immeasurable sentient beings, or because it generates immeasurable meritorious results, it is immeasurable. Because cultivating this will lead to rebirth in the Brahma world, it is the abode of Brahma.
