It is because based on that, five branches and so on are established. Why are there no branches established in the formless realms? Because everything is of one taste in quiescence, therefore separate branches are not established. Thirdly, why are the meditations determined to be four, neither more nor less? Because meditators seek to be liberated from the feelings of pleasure and pain, but do not seek to be liberated from equanimity, because it is difficult for children to understand the suffering of formation. There are two kinds of painful feelings: coarse and subtle. The first dhyana is liberation from coarse painful feelings because it is free from desire from unpleasantness. The second is also liberation from subtle suffering because it is free from the evil destinies of the painful side. The first dhyana is not liberation from all suffering, because the root of suffering has not been abandoned. As it is said, in the Compendium: Why is the root of suffering not abandoned in the first dhyana? Answer: Because it has not been separated from the evil destinies of that side. If the root of suffering were abandoned, then the distinction of abiding in the second dhyana would not be apparent, therefore it should be understood that only what has not been abandoned. There are also two kinds of pleasant feelings, coarse and subtle. The third dhyana is liberation from coarse pleasant feelings, because it is free from desire from pleasantness. The fourth is also liberation from subtle pleasant feelings because it is free from desire even from the root of pleasure. Therefore, based on liberation from the four kinds of coarse and subtle feelings of pleasure and pain, the four dhyanas are established. As it is said, in the Compendium: Why are there only four, neither more nor less? Answer: Because it is completely beyond pleasure and pain, because it is complete. Thus, until the last fourth dhyana, it is completely beyond pleasure and pain. Thus, the dhyanas are distinguished by liberation from feelings, form

These formless realms are definitely produced from consciousness, so they are thoroughly distinguished. Like this, there are two kinds of consciousness: external form and internal consciousness, from which arise two kinds of consciousness that discern clearly. The first is further divided into two: the form to be abandoned and the consciousness that is obstructed, and the consciousness of space as an antidote. What necessarily arises from these is, in order, the sphere of infinite space and the sphere of infinite consciousness. Regarding the clear discernment of consciousness, there are also two: attachment to consciousness that is not in harmony, and the consciousness of nothingness as its antidote. For the first, what necessarily arises is the sphere of nothingness, and for the second, what necessarily arises is the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Therefore, (the four dhyanas) are more than the four formless realms, and not less. The order is established according to the sequence in which they arise in the continuum of the yogi. The third is the result: from cultivating the first dhyana in small, medium, and large degrees, one is born, in order, into the retinue of Brahma, the attendant of Brahma, and the Great Brahma. Similarly, from cultivating the second, third, and fourth dhyanas in small, medium, and large degrees, one should know that the three birthplaces of the second, third, and fourth dhyanas are accomplished in order. From cultivating the formless realms (the four formless absorptions) in small, medium, and large degrees, one should know that the birthplaces of the formless realms are accomplished in various ways, such as high, low, inferior, and superior. Among them, small means not possessing both applications. Medium means possessing one of them. Large means possessing both. Second, explaining the four immeasurables in detail, the first of the six meanings is the individual essence of each: Loving-kindness is based on meditation, focusing on sentient beings who desire happiness, thinking, "Alas, how wonderful it would be if these sentient beings could attain happiness," it is the samadhi and wisdom of abiding in a state of perfect attainment. Compassion is focusing on sentient beings who are suffering, with the thought, "Alas, how wonderful it would be if they could be free from suffering." Joy is focusing on sentient beings who possess happiness, with the thought, "How wonderful it would be if they did not depart from happiness." Equanimity is focusing on sentient beings who possess afflictions, with the thought, "Alas, if these beings could be free from desire.
