Below that, since most afflictions have been abandoned, the manifestation of pervasive imputation does not occur, and arrogance arises, thinking, "Have all afflictions been abandoned?" In order to examine whether they have been abandoned, one attends to the signs that are in accordance with the arising of afflictions and individually investigates them. Sixth, when examining in this way, knowing that a few afflictions have not been abandoned, in order to be separated from all afflictions, one attends to the antidote for abandoning the three subtle fetters. Seventh, after that, one obtains the actual mind of the first dhyana and so on. Among these, the first two are the path of application. The third, fourth, and sixth are the path of immediate proximity. The fifth is the path of distinction. The seventh is the path of liberation. The first six are proximate attainment, and the last is actual attainment. Secondly, there are four points: definition, classification, the meaning of each classification, and establishing the ascertainment. The first point is about the two, dhyana and the formless. First, regarding dhyana, there are two types, distinguished by the cause of meditative absorption and the result of arising. The first is: from the aspect of limbs, it is the one-pointed mind that has transcended the lower grounds, along with its concomitants. The second is: in another life, it is the fully ripened or similar result of having cultivated the dhyana of the cause of meditative absorption. That is, all the innate dharmas in the continuum of sentient beings from the Brahma realm up to Akanistha. Secondly, regarding the formless, like dhyana, there are also two types. The first is the formless of the cause of meditative absorption: from the aspect of the object, it is the one-pointed mind that has transcended the lower grounds, along with its concomitants. The second is the formless of the result of arising: in another life, it is the fully ripened or similar result of having cultivated the formless of the cause of meditative absorption. That is, all the innate dharmas in the continuum of sentient beings born in the four realms, such as the sphere of infinite space. Why do the dhyanas transcend by limbs, and the formless ones transcend by object? Because all the dhyanas are similar in that they all have the nature of quiescence and coarseness, so there is no difference in object and aspect. But the higher ones necessarily emerge from the coarse limbs of the lower ones, so there is a distinction in the difference of limbs. Therefore, limbs

It is called transcendence by object. All the formless realms are unified in tranquility, so there are no different limbs, but because the upper realms necessarily arise from the lower realms through different objects such as space and consciousness, the objects are different. Therefore, it is called transcendence by object. The second is: Dhyana (meditative concentration) ranges from the first to the fourth dhyana. The formless realms are the four between space, consciousness, nothingness, and neither perception nor non-perception. Furthermore, the dhyanas and the first three formless realms have three types: afflicted, pure, and unpolluted. The realm of neither perception nor non-perception has two types: afflicted and pure, but no unpolluted, because the flow of consciousness is not clear and cannot serve as a basis for the transcendent path where the object is extremely clear. For the preparatory stages, the first has both pure and unpolluted, while the rest have only pure. Why do the preparatory stages not have afflictions? Because these are paths that lead to detachment from desire, and afflictions cannot lead to detachment from desire. Why do the remaining preparatory stages not have the unpolluted? Because one who has not attained the actual state of the lower ground cannot enter the preparatory stage of the higher ground, and one who has attained the preparatory stage of the higher ground relies on the actual state of the lower ground to cultivate the path, not the preparatory stage of the higher ground, because it is easier to cultivate the path from the actual state of the lower ground than from the preparatory stage of the higher ground. Why does the preparatory stage of the first dhyana have the unpolluted? Because those who have not attained the actual state of dhyana, such as stream-enterers, rely solely on the preparatory stage of the first dhyana to cultivate the path, since the supramundane path is the union of tranquility and insight, so it must be cultivated relying on the mind in equipoise, and because the actual state of mind has not been attained. For example, just as if there is no right hand, one must rely on the left hand. Therefore, the preparatory stage of the first dhyana can lead to detachment from all desires in the three realms, so it is also called invincible. The actual states can lead to detachment from desire in the lower realms.
