These are: Having abandoned afflictions, with remainder of clinging, as long as the life span is not exhausted, they will not die, therefore they are not without remainder. Fifth, the definition of upward transference, its divisions, the explanation of causes, alternating meditation, there are three. The first is: A non-returner who is born in the Form Realm, from the continuum, is able to attain nirvana in the support of Akanistha or the Peak of Existence. Here, "upward" refers to Akanistha and the Peak of Existence. In order, they are the Form Realm and the end of existence. "Transference" is: Going through being born there. The second is: From the perspective of causes, there are two: going to the end of Akanistha and going to the end of the Peak of Existence. A person who practices higher insight, by meditating on alternating contaminated and uncontaminated samadhi, goes to Akanistha. A person who practices calm abiding, by experiencing the taste of the samadhi that arises in the continuum, except for Great Brahma and Akanistha, the other realms of the Form and Formless Realms gradually continue, and thus goes to the Peak of Existence. The definitions of these, in order, are: Through being born in the Form Realm, being able to attain nirvana in the support of Akanistha, and being able to attain nirvana in the support of the Peak of Existence. In these two cases, it is not necessarily certain to go to Akanistha and the Peak of Existence, because it is possible to attain nirvana in the intermediate stage as well. Even so, it is called going there, because after that one will not go to other places, just as if a stream-enterer stops like that, it is like seven times of coming and going. Why does one not go to other places after that? Because there is no other superior place above Akanistha, and there is no other place above the Peak of Existence. These are those who have the karma of experiencing changes in other lifetimes, those with dull faculties, and those with great afflictions. Among these, there are three ways of going to the end of Akanistha: leaping, half-leaping, and dying and transferring in all places. The first is: Here, by meditating on the fourth dhyana as alternating meditation, because one has experienced the taste of the first dhyana, one declines from the second dhyana and above, and then is born in the Brahma host realm. There, by the power of previous habituation, one meditates on the fourth dhyana as alternating meditation, and thus is born below it in Akanistha, and attains nirvana. The second is: The other is similar to the previous one, starting from the Brahma host realm.
