It is so. When the seventh has been abandoned, and the eighth has not been abandoned, isn't there an interval between the two forms? If so, how is it said to be the only obstacle? Even if the eighth has not been abandoned, it cannot obstruct because it can be abandoned in that lifetime. The ninth can obstruct the attainment of the non-returner fruit in that lifetime, and after abandoning it, because it is difficult to transcend the desire realm, and initially it greatly obstructs the attainment of the non-returner Arhat fruit. As it is said, just as it obstructs activities in three situations, so too do afflictions cause obstruction. Third, the boundary is: for the sudden realizer, from the sixteenth moment of realizing the truth, and for the gradual realizer, from the liberation path of abandoning the sixth category to the uninterrupted path of the ninth category. Pair three, concerning entering the stream of the non-returner and abiding, first, the three aspects of entering the stream, the first is the definition: striving on the path to obtain the fruit of excellent monastic practice, having been thoroughly distinguished by abandoning the last five lower fetters. The classification is the same as the once-returner. The boundary is: the boundary between the non-returner entering the stream who has previously abandoned desire is the same as the once-returner entering the stream who is a sudden realizer, and the difference is that what was previously abandoned by the path of seeing is between the ninth category of the desire realm and the ninth category of the realm of nothingness. The two gradual enterers abide between the path of application of abandoning the seventh category and the uninterrupted path of the ninth category. The three aspects of abiding in the fruit, the definition is: abiding in the fruit of excellent monastic practice, having been thoroughly distinguished by abandoning the last five lower fetters. The last five lower fetters are: the three fetters and the seventh category in the desire realm, and malice. The first three are: the last existence is the cause of an ordinary being, and the last two are: the last realm is the cause of the desire realm, therefore it is called corresponding to the last category. Why is it called non-returner? Because one is no longer born in the desire realm, or the birth of birth is cut off, therefore one no longer accepts a second birth there. Second, the classification, if divided by the way of obtaining the fruit, there are two types: gradual realizer and non-returner who has previously abandoned desire. If divided by the way of relying on the noble Dharma, there are two types: non-returner who has completed his life in the desire realm and non-returner who has not. The first is: relying on the noble path in the desire realm, obtaining the non-returner fruit through successive births, that is

Because of much sorrow. When the state of Non-Returner is attained, one enters Nirvana at that very moment. As it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: "A noble one who has completed a lifetime in the desire realm, does not go to another realm but attains Nirvana." This is different from the Peace of Seeing Dharma, because when the noble path is attained, Nirvana is not directly realized. Secondly, when the noble path is attained, the state of Non-Returner is attained at that very moment. There are four types: Approaching Form, Approaching Formless, Peace of Seeing Dharma, and Those Who Manifest the Body. First, Approaching Form, which has two aspects: definition and classification. The first, the definition, is the Non-Returner who has a basis in the desire realm, taking rebirth in the intermediate state or the state of birth in the form realm. The second, the classification, has five types. First, entering Nirvana in the intermediate state means abandoning the afflictions associated with being born in the form realm, but not abandoning the afflictions associated with direct realization, thus directly realizing Nirvana on the basis of the form realm. This has three aspects: For example, like a spark of fire in the morning that dies as soon as it jumps up, one enters Nirvana as soon as the intermediate state is formed; like a hot piece of iron rising into the sky and dying, one enters Nirvana in the middle of the life of the intermediate state; like a spark rising and dying just before it falls to the ground, one enters Nirvana at the end of the life of the intermediate state. These are all Nirvana without remainder, because the intermediate state is a state of seeking birth, so when one is separated from the desire for birth, one dies, and an Arhat is separated from the desire for birth, so the body ceases. Alternatively, the intermediate state is short-lived, so it quickly enters Nirvana without remainder, hence it is called entering without remainder. Among those who approach form, these are those who have the karma of direct realization, sharp faculties, and small afflictions. Second, the Born-and-Dying, is because both the afflictions of birth and direct realization have not been abandoned, so as soon as the state of birth in the form realm is formed, one directly realizes the path and attains Nirvana. Third, the With-Effort, is the same as the previous one, but one directly realizes the path through effort and enters Nirvana. Fourth, the Without-Effort, is because of the power of habituation, one directly realizes the path without effort and attains Nirvana. These three have the karma of experiencing the result after birth, and the faculties and afflictions are in the middle.
