And, having abandoned it, one obtains the third dhyana, which has the essence of bliss without joy. After that, since bliss also gives rise to changes that disturb the mind, it is seen as an opposing factor to samadhi, and it is abandoned through mindfulness and complete equanimity. Having abandoned it, one obtains the fourth dhyana, which has the feeling of equanimity, having abandoned both bliss and suffering. Thus, the opposing factors to dhyana are of three types: great, medium, and small. The first is: desire for sensual pleasures and harm, which hinder those who have not yet attained dhyana from attaining it. The second is: investigation and analysis, which hinder the attainment from becoming excellent. The third is: joy and bliss, which hinder the mind from becoming supremely workable. Among these, being free from the great opposing factor is the first dhyana. Being free from the medium opposing factor is the second and third dhyanas. Being free from the small opposing factor is the fourth dhyana, therefore the fourth dhyana is the most workable mind because it is free from opposing factors. In this way, if one is free from attachment to all feelings that give rise to change, then the yogi will understand that holding onto the notion of an object as a sign will disturb one's own continuum, and in order to be liberated from notions, they will cultivate the formless absorptions. That is, first, seeing the notion of form and tangibility as coarse, one abandons it through the notion of space, and having abandoned it, one obtains the sphere of infinite space. After that, in order to abandon the notion of space, one abandons the notion of consciousness, and having abandoned it, one obtains the sphere of infinite consciousness. After that, seeing the notion of consciousness as having faults, one abandons it through the notion of nothingness, and having abandoned it, one obtains the sphere of nothingness. After that, also observing faults in the notion of nothingness, one abandons it through the notion of neither perception nor non-perception, and having abandoned it, one obtains the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. The notion of liberation from this is nothing other than not having realized the dharmadhatu, so
