If it is said that afflictions do not arise, it is because these are the paths that lead to detachment from desire, and afflictions cannot lead to detachment from desire. Why do the remaining proximity concentrations not give rise to the uncontaminated? Because one who has not attained the actual state of a lower realm cannot enter the proximity concentration of a higher realm, and one who has attained the proximity concentration of a higher realm does not rely on the actual state of a lower realm for the proximity concentration of a higher realm in the practice of the path, because it is easier to practice the path with the actual state of a lower realm than with the proximity concentration of a higher realm. Why does the proximity concentration of the first dhyana have the uncontaminated? Because those who have not attained the actual state of dhyana, such as the stream-enterers, rely solely on the proximity concentration of the first dhyana to practice the path, and the path that transcends the world is the union of calm abiding and insight, so it must be practiced relying on a mind in equipoise, and because the mind of the actual state has not been attained. For example, just as if there is no right hand, one must rely on the left hand. Therefore, the proximity concentration of the first dhyana can lead to detachment from all desires of the three realms, so it is also called incomparable. The actual states do not lead to detachment from the desires of the lower realms, because the proximity concentration has already detached them, so it is not necessary. The contaminated actual states do not act as antidotes to what is to be abandoned in their own realm and higher realms, because they are bound by the desire of their own realm and are inferior to the higher realms. Therefore, these are merely paths for dwelling in bliss in this life and for manifesting qualities, but not paths for detachment from desire. The uncontaminated actual states act as antidotes to their own realm and higher realms, so they are also paths for detachment from desire, as well as paths for manifesting qualities and dwelling in bliss in this life. The proximity concentrations are solely antidotes to the lower realms, so they are solely paths for detachment from desire, but because they do not encompass the limbs, they are not paths for manifesting qualities, and because they involve effort to abandon unfavorable factors, they are also not paths for dwelling in bliss in this life. The first dhyana has only the actual state and two kinds of special states, the first of which is to counteract desire with the limb of investigation and analysis.

A mind of single-pointed concentration that is supremely distinguished by being free from desire, together with its associated factors. Possessing the joy and happiness born of solitude as a beneficial limb. The second is: With investigation as a limb of antidote, from the examination, being free from desire, the supremely great single-pointed mind, together with its associated factors, possessing equanimity of feeling. Among the five limbs of the first dhyana, examination is the coarsest, therefore even without being free from desire from the first dhyana, it can be abandoned. Therefore, the first dhyana has, on its coarse limb, the distinction of being free from desire and not being free from desire, having both the mere and the differentiated. The limbs of the second dhyana and above cannot be abandoned without being free from desire from their own ground, therefore they do not have the distinction of mere and differentiated. The second dhyana is: With inner clarity as a limb of antidote, from examination and investigation, being free from desire, the supremely distinguished single-pointed mind, together with its associated factors. Possessing the joy and happiness born of samadhi as a beneficial limb. The third dhyana is: With mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity as limbs of antidote, being free from desire from joy, the supremely distinguished single-pointed mind, together with its associated factors. Possessing happiness devoid of joy as a beneficial limb. The fourth dhyana is: With pure mindfulness and equanimity as limbs of antidote, being free from desire from happiness, the supremely distinguished single-pointed mind, together with its associated factors. Possessing equanimity of feeling as a beneficial limb. Thereupon, first the yogi, seeing desire and harm as the root of all conflict and suffering, abandons desire and harm through examination and investigation of the faults of desire. Having abandoned these, one obtains the first dhyana, which has the joy and happiness born of solitude. After that, seeing that examination and investigation disturb the continuum, as an unfavorable factor, one abandons it with inner clarity. Having abandoned it, one obtains the second dhyana, which has the joy and happiness born of samadhi. After that, seeing that joy also agitates the mind, being contrary to samadhi, one abandons it with mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity.
