Arising from faith, arising from extreme solitude, gathering joy, observation, the edge of application, and contemplating the fruits of the edge of application, etc. Among these, the first is the contemplation of equanimity, whereby one examines the lower realms such as the desire realm as coarse through the faults of short life and abundant afflictions, and the higher realms such as the first dhyana as the opposite, examining them as the nature of peace. This should be understood as having the nature of mixed hearing and thinking. The second is that after this, transcending hearing and thinking, one cultivates shamatha and vipashyana focusing on one's own characteristics in the aspect of single-pointed meditation. This is meditation-born. The third is the contemplation that initially possesses the path of abandonment, whereby one abandons the three great afflictions of the lower realms such as the desire realm and attains freedom from the evil destinies of that side. The fourth is that after this, the yogi touches small joy and bliss by abandoning the three great afflictions, and because of delighting in abandonment, contemplates the objects that become joyful from time to time, and makes efforts to be free from drowsiness and sleep, and abandons the three medium afflictions. The fifth is that after this, because most afflictions have been abandoned, latent tendencies do not manifest, and the conceit arises of whether all afflictions have been abandoned, so in order to examine whether they have been abandoned or not, one contemplates the signs that are in accordance with the arising of afflictions, and this is individual examination. The sixth is that when examining in this way, knowing that a few afflictions have not been abandoned, in order to be free from all afflictions, one contemplates the antidote to abandoning the three small ones. The seventh is that after this, one attains the actual mind of the first dhyana, etc. Among these, the first two are the path of application, the third, fourth, and sixth are the path of immediate proximity, the fifth is the path of distinction, and the seventh is the path of liberation. The first six are the preparatory stage, and the last is the actual stage. Secondly, there are four: nature, classification, the meaning of each classification, and establishing the ascertainment. The first is of the two: dhyana and the formless. First, in dhyana, there are causal samadhi and resultant

There are two types of births. The first is: through the limbs, it is associated with a one-pointed mind that transcends the lower realms. The second is: the Vipāka or Niṣyanda result of meditating on Samāpatti-dhyāna in other lives. That is, all the innate dharmas in the continuum of sentient beings from the Brahmakāyika to the Akanishtha. Secondly, formlessness is also twofold like dhyāna. The first, formlessness as the cause of Samāpatti, is: through the object of focus, it is associated with a one-pointed mind that transcends the lower realms. The second, formlessness as the fruit of birth, is: the Vipāka or Niṣyanda result of meditating on formlessness of Samāpatti in other lives. That is, all the innate dharmas in the continuum of sentient beings born in the four formless realms such as the realm of infinite space. Why do the dhyānas transcend through limbs, and the formless ones transcend through objects of focus? Because all the dhyānas are similar in having aspects of tranquility and roughness, there is no difference in objects of focus and aspects. The higher ones must arise from the coarser limbs of the lower ones, so there is a difference in limbs, therefore it is called transcending through limbs. All the formless ones are of one taste in tranquility, there is no difference in limbs, but through the difference in objects of focus such as space and consciousness, the higher ones must arise from the lower ones, so there is a difference in objects of focus, therefore it is called transcending through objects of focus. Secondly, the dhyānas are from the first to the fourth dhyāna. The formless ones are the four realms of infinite space, infinite consciousness, nothingness, and neither perception nor non-perception. Moreover, the dhyānas and the first three formless realms have three types: defiled, pure, and undefiled. The realm of neither perception nor non-perception has only two types: defiled and pure, but no undefiled, because its mode of operation is not clear, it cannot serve as the basis for the transcendental path where the object of focus is very clear. Among the Upacāra-samādhis, the first has both pure and undefiled, and the rest have only pure. Why in the Upacāra-samādhis
