It is a close opponent branch. Because they can eliminate joy and other unfavorable aspects of the third dhyana. Happiness without joy is a branch of benefit. In the fourth dhyana, pure mindfulness and equanimity are close opponent branches. Because they can eliminate happiness and other unfavorable aspects of the fourth dhyana. Feeling equanimity is a branch of benefit. Why are mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity present in the first dhyana, but not established as close opponent branches? Because although there are mindfulness and so on in the first dhyana, they are accomplished by investigation and analysis, and do not function with their own essence, so they are not mentioned as close opponent branches. In the second dhyana, although they function with their own essence, they are suppressed by joy, so they are not mentioned by their own names, but are mentioned by the name "inner clarity." The third dhyana is liberated from the universal entanglement of joy, so mindfulness and so on are mentioned by their own names. In the fourth dhyana, because it is free from all the faults of dhyana, mindfulness and equanimity are indicated by the word "pure." So what is the difference between the first and second dhyanas? There is a difference in whether investigation and analysis are free from attachment, and there is a difference in whether samadhi is complete or incomplete. What is the difference between the second and third dhyanas? There is a difference in whether one is free from attachment to joy, and there is a difference in whether the accomplishment of benefit is complete or incomplete. What is the difference between the third and fourth dhyanas? There is a difference in whether one is liberated from the faults of dhyana, and there is a difference in whether true purity is complete or incomplete. Why is the first dhyana called the dhyana of joy and happiness born of solitude? Because its joy and happiness are born only from being free from attachment to desire and harmful and other sinful non-virtuous things. Why is the second dhyana called the dhyana of joy and happiness born of samadhi? Because its joy and happiness are born from the complete samadhi that is free from attachment to investigation and analysis. So what is the nature of the joy and happiness of the first two dhyanas? To this, the Vaibhashikas say: Joy is consciousness.

Some say that the feeling of earth is tranquility, and happiness is extremely subdued. Some Sutra masters say that joy is the same as before, and happiness is the tranquility of the feeling of the transformation of the sense consciousness, because it is said in the Sutra, "Happiness is experienced by the body," and extreme subduing should not be happiness, because in the fourth dhyana, extreme subduing is the most excellent, but happiness is not mentioned as a limb. As explained here, the tranquility of the feeling of the transformation of mind consciousness is called joy because it benefits the transformation of mind consciousness and its retinue. Being in accordance with samadhi, it turns inward, and is called happiness because it benefits the body with the senses, but these two are not different entities. In the third dhyana, the tranquility of the feeling of the transformation of mind consciousness is completely occupied by mindfulness and equanimity, so it does not do the work of shaking the mind, so it is not called joy, but looks inward and is called happiness because it benefits the body with the senses. The third question is: Why are the dhyanas determined to have five or four limbs? Because from the perspective of the antidote limb that eliminates harm, the benefit limb that accomplishes benefit, and the place limb of both, five limbs and so on are established. Why are no limbs established for the formless ones? Because everything is of one taste in tranquility, so no separate limbs are established. The third question is: Why are the dhyanas determined to be four, neither more nor less? Because the dhyana practitioners seek to be liberated from the feelings of happiness and suffering, but do not seek to be liberated from equanimity, because it is difficult for children to understand the suffering of action. There are two kinds of suffering: gross and subtle. The first dhyana is liberation from gross suffering because it is free from desire from unpleasantness. The second dhyana is liberation from the suffering of evil destinies, so it is also liberation from subtle suffering. The first dhyana is not liberation from all suffering, because the root of suffering has not been abandoned.
